Initially, Uniform Civil Code was proposed on the parliament floor. But there was a strong opposition from the majority as well as the minority community. Parliamentarians felt that government was interfering with peoples religion.
Nehru and Dr. Amebedkar were headstrong on getting this bill passed but later on as the opposition grew stronger and they had to back track.
Nehru didn’t give up and presented the bill as Hindu Civil Code. He wanted to assure the minorities, that had stayed back during partition and was assured of complete freedom, that government is not interfering with their religious freedom.
As for the Hindu’s, Nehru hoped that the people would understand his take and that’s what happened. He explained this to the parliamentarians as well.
Dr. Ambedkar who wanted to bring in Uniform Civil Code understood Nehru’s take and agreed to passing of Hindu Civil Code and hoped that the future parliamentarians would make this a Uniform Civil Code.
