A ceramic pot is a clay pot, whether or not it’s glazed. Things that can make a pot unsafe: using clay that contains unsafe heavy metal contaminants, one glazed with a glaze containing lead, cadmium or even occasionally uranium oxide, and if a piece isn’t fired properly if at all. Generally a pot will be safe depending on it’s use. Some firing techniques will make a piece not safe for food, the same for some glazes.
In general most school Clay’s that meet ATSM guidelines are considered safe once worked and fired. ASTM International – Wikipedia
