I spent time in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and each of us were issued with a black colored Victorinox . I have never used the bottle opener in training, but otherwise the saw, the blade, the screwdriver, the tweezer and the toothpick are all very useful outfield.

I think that Swiss knives are not issued by some countries to their army because they might be thinking that the knives might not prove to be deployed as frequently as the guns might be.

A lot of countries issue pocket knives to their troops. Like any piece of military hardware the world over, they go through lengthy evaluation and procurement protocols… and then hand the contract to the lowest bidder!
Victorinox has made knives for the German, Dutch, and of course the Swiss Army. The current 111mm Soldier 08 model sold in stores is Victorinox’s issue knife for the Swiss military and is based on the knife issued to the Bundeswehr.
Generally, however, it seems that military is moving toward a multi-tool and away from the pocket knife for general issue. The US military supplies (or at least ‘supplied’) its troops with one of several versions of the Gerber MP600, depending on deployment.

I know of at least one other country that DOES issue them: Germany.
Swiss Army knives have been issued as standard pocket knife for decades – only recently they switched to a new model from Victorinox that looks slightly different and has a loop on the blade to allow single-handed opening. The only real difference between the German Army knife and the civilian and Swiss Army editions is the colour… Germany has opted for olive drab plastic covers, where the civilian version has red plastic and the Swiss Army has aluminium.
And unlike the Swiss Army regular version (and in line with the civilian and Swiss Officer version), the German Army version always had a corkscrew 🙂

Don’t they? How do they sharpen their pencils, cut off loose ends, and do whatever people do with a utility knife? I was issued one as a Dutch reservist and use it all the time. I think it’s a Victorinox.
