A lot of singers have sung “Mack The Knife.” The song was written by Kurt Weill with lyrics (in German) by Bertolt Brecht for the 1928 musical Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera). In the premiere, it was sung by Kurt Gerron, who played the role of the police chief.
In 1954, an English translation of The Threepenny Opera by Marc Blitzstein opened Off-Broadway. Variations of this translation of “Mack The Knife” have been recorded by many artists, including Louis Armstrong in 1956 and Bobby Darin in 1959.
A 1976 translation by Ralph Manheim and John Willett was recorded by Lyle Lovett, Sting, and Nick Cave in the 1990s.
