Knives in a variety of forms were common in the middle ages, and daggers were an important part of a soldier’s kit.
Particularly in the late medieval period when plate armor became more common and more protective, it’s likely that the vast majority of troops on a medieval battlefield would have a dagger on them. In a battlefield application, daggers were used at extremely close range, often when the two fighters were grappling or wrestling on the ground. A short standing implement like a dagger gives some of the easiest usage in such situations. Full plate armor is very effective at stopping attacks, so daggers were used to exploit small gaps in the armor, places like the joints, armpits, neck, groin, and of course the visor or eyeslits. Specialized daggers, such as the famed rondel dagger, became common place for defeating armored opponents.
Off the battlefield, daggers had a similar role in duels, trials, and even tournament fights. In such roles the parrying dagger and “sword breaker” types also became a common choice in certain contexts.
