I would assume that I have one of the smallest main EDC knives:
The Victorinox “Midnight Manager @Work”.
So, why do I carry that as my main EDC? The answer is as simple as it might be surprising: It does everything I ask from it and then some.
For context: I am an office dwelling, mouse pushing urban creature. And I do not believe in TEOTWAWKI “Zombie Alien Strippers from Orion 5 invading earth” scenarios.
So here is what the knife does for me:
I live and work in an environment where most larger pocket knives are illegal (because most of them are one hand opening AND locking) and/or unacceptable because of their looks/size and fixed blades are simply unacceptable. This small Vic is legal and as unintimidating as a pocket knife can get. I have seen sporks that were more intimidating.
My company banned plastic bottles. Our beverages now mostly come with pop-caps. While in theory a bottle opener should be everywhere, they aren’t always. So I have mine with me.
Sometimes, I need to open letters, small packages and blister packs. That small knife is good enough for that.
I already used both screwdrivers to do minor repairs.
Ladies are quite thankful for the scissors every now and then. And for me runaway threads are an abomination, too.
While a lot of people made fun of the small flashlight, that stopped the day I was able to get to the fuse box using it.
The thumb drive contains a Kali Linux and a partition which holds a copy of all of my important documents, encrypted. So even when my home burns down, not all is lost.
Even the micro-pen came in handy to put down a phone number or email address on the go.
Chicago Cutlery Belden 15 Piece Premium Kitchen Knife
Everyday around the ranch, I carry a small folding, liner lock, pocket knife; 4″ folded, with a 3″ long, 2mm thick spear-point blade. All stainless steel with “safety orange” G10 scales. It stays clipped to the left-hand front pocket of my jeans 24/7. Looks KINDA like this ( not a CRKT):
When I go out in the field (hunting, camping, hiking, etc.) I add a bigger, heavier folder; a Zero Tolerance Z301 like this:
Hope this helps. 🤠🔪
Wanbasion Black Stainless Steel Knife Set, Sharp Kitchen Knife
I carry the CRKT S.P.E.W. (small pocket everyday wharnecliffe. with a custom red kydex sheath. the knife is excellent especially for the cost, but the stock sheath is lacking.
Authentic XYJ Since 1986,Outstanding Ancient Forging,6.7 Inch Full Tang
My Victorinox Camper.
It’s solid. Dependable. Beautifully made and finished. And it is UK legal.
It has everything I might need when out and about. I actually have a SwissChamp, a Soldier, A Spartan, a Minichamp and a SwissTool. But this knife is the one that goes into my coat pocket every time I go out of my front door. A pair of scissors would be nice, but I have a pair in my Swiss card, which lives in my wallet.
The main selling point of Victorinox for me is one word; QUALITY. The ‘fit and finish’ is simply the best that you can get. I have added a corkscrew screwdriver to my Camper, and a very simple lanyard.
Amazon Basics 14-Piece Kitchen Knife Block Set, High-Carbon
I carry an opinel folding knife, either a no.8 when I’m out in the woods or a no.6 when in urban areas. I like the opinel brand because they are simplistic, good quality, traditional and inexpensive! The are quite sharp and I find them easy to sharpen too. There is a lot of different types from sizes to wood types to bladprofiles so that’s neat! I’ve been carrying and using opines for years now and I would recommend them for sure!
Victorinox Fibrox Pro Knife, 8-Inch Chef’s FFP, 8 Inch, Black
I carry a few blades on me. Part of this is that my wife buys me presents, and then I feel obligated to carry them around (grin), so I went from a single knife to multiple.
Anyway.
In the “small” category is : Tool Logic Credit Card Companion with Lens/Compass CC1SB – 9 Tools, Black, 2″ Blade – Gifts For Men – Amazon.com
In the “Medium” is a Cold Steel Finn Wolf ( You are being redirected… I hate when weblinks do that)
ALBATROSS EDC Cool Sharp Tactical Folding Pocket Knife
My favorite EDC knife is the discontinued Gerber Magnum LST. It fits my hand perfectly. The drop point blade with a deep belly is an ideal shape for all sorts of tasks. Note that this knife predates the Fiskars buyout so it is of much higher quality than the shlock currently being sold under the once-proud Gerber name.
When I found out they were discontinuing the knife I bought up as many as I could find. Not coincidentally i have 3 fixed blade knives that are nearly identical in size and blade geometry.
I also have a Leatherman Surge which lives in my backpack, but I rarely use the knife blades on it. The tools that get the most use are the screwdriver and pliers. The saw blade also gets a surprising amount of use.
RoverTac Pocket Knife Multitool Folding Knife Tactical Survival Camping Knife
My EDC isn’t small. I carry a Ruike frame lock with a 3.75″ blade. It’s a bit longer than I really but the blade shape and quality are so good I deal with the length. I carry a small Gerber multitool in the other pocket. I carry a small knife when I dress up which could be one of many. I have over a hundred knives.
12-Piece Color-Coded Kitchen Knife Set, 6 Knives with 6 Blade Guards
I generally always carry one of those Swiss Army style pen knives. This knife doesn’t have any value as a fighting knife, but they are handy to have sometimes.
I sometimes carry a small folding knife.

This one. I find it very useful on a regular basis.
Smith & Wesson Extreme Ops SWA24S 7.1in S.S. Folding Knife with 3.1in
Well this cheap Smith and Wesson knife is always on my right side.
And I keep this Browning on the side of my backpack.
Neither one are expensive but they are sharp and do what I need them to.
Mossy Oak Survival Hunting Knife with Sheath, 15-inch Fixed Blade
I am not described as either a knife aficionado or a knife snob. Yet, I likely own several hundred knives of various types and qualities, accumulated since 1958.
I spent more than 40 years in vocations where being able to quickly hand sharpen and hone a knife to a dry hair shaving edge was a big advantage..
Today, for EDC, I mostly carry inexpensive, shaving sharp, China made folding knives made of inexpensive stainless steel like 440 or 420-J2 series steels.
They fulfill my usual needs for a knife in everyday life. If I should encounter an abusive, must be accomplished task, I do not severely damage of destroy an expensive, nicer knife.
Spring Assisted Knife – Pocket Folding Knife – Military Style
I carry a folder, actually it’s a Boker knockoff but durable and got it reasonably priced about 5 years ago, and it has been very useful, used it to cut a cord of a cat’s tail, poor dear, circulation got cut off, some wanker have the nerve to pick on a cat, remove splinters etc.
Gerber Gear 22-48485 Paraframe Mini Pocket Knife, 2.2 Inch Fine Edge Blade
Small is a subjective term but my daily carry is CRKT Denali or Benchmade 154CM, alongside one of several inexpensive box cutters. I also often carry one of several small fixed blades if I plan on eating with a knife.
Columbia River 6613N CRKT 6613N Denali Combo Edge Knife
Barrage® Family
I carry the CRKT more often, I don’t think it raises as many eyebrows if used in “polite” company.
CJRB CUTLERY Folding Knife Crag
I’ll typically have 2 different tools in my pocket.
If cutting needs to be done, then I am pulling my Benchmade Griptilian 550. It sits in my pocket as if it were always meant to be there, comes out of the pocket quickly, opens instinctively and when in my hand its use is as instinctive and as natural as any of the fingers on my hands.
If the job requires a little more specialization, then I reach into the pocket and pull out a Gerber Dime. It has blade(s) which occasionally see use, but only for specific needs when the Benchmade would be overkill or a poor fit.
Then there are days when I suspect a multi-tool may be required. But that is not within the definition of true EDC.
Zelite Infinity Damascus Chef Knife 8 Inch, Japanese Chef Knife
I happen to keep a folding Buck Knives Vantage and have for years now. I used to carry a larger CRKT M21 , but it was a bit too big and wasn’t that comfortable to handle. Besides, it wasn’t necessarily legal everywhere either, lol. The thing is that there are so many folding knife options out there that you really do need to go to a knife store and put your hands on a variety of options so you find something that fits your hands comfortably as well as your price range. Just be sure it has solid locking device and is clearly solidly made (not just a quality blade material) and you’ll be fine. Something less than $50 should suffice for most people.
HENCKELS 8-pc Steak Knife Set
The Victorinox Pioneer Alox. I have carried one for over fifty years. It gets the job done (it’s a damn fine tool).
imarku Japanese Chef Knife – Pro Kitchen Knife 8 Inch Chef’s Knives
On a daily bases I carry a Gerber Remix. I do this for two reasons.
Cheap. Cost me $25.
Large open ring at the hinge that allows me to clip it to the Petzl carabiner on which I carry my car keys if i need to take it out of my pocket and keep it elsewhere.
I also carry a cheap CRKT Drifter on the water bottle pocket of my backpack as a backup.
I have a nicer Benchmade that I carry for dressier occasions.
Basic reasoning is to allow for damage to be done to cheaper, yet quality, knives and save the expensive for when I wear my nice clothes. All of this will obviously be adjusted when I become rich and Benchmade becomes seems less expensive to me. Hey! A guy can dream right?
MOSFiATA 8 Super Sharp Professional Chef’s Knife
I carry a Leatherman wave. It does not offend the delicate senses of the general public but is razor sharp and more than adequate. Mine rides in a custom sheath with a flashlight.
