Butterfly knives, also known as Balisongs, are fun to play with and take some manual dexterity to manipulate but, all things considered, are not very practical. I consider them more of a novelty. Also, this type of knife may be illegal to carry concealed in some states and jurisdictions. I believe Balisongs are illegal to own, or carry, in the State of New Mexico. Also, since many of these knives have blades over 3″ many localities may have blade length restrictions on carrying concealed knives. I have been collecting knives for over 30 and couple of Balisongs have passed through my hands. Most of the major knife manufacturers carry at least one Balisong style knife in their inventory, and there is wide variation in prices and quality. As in most things, there is a product to suit almost any budget. One of the better quality Balisongs is made by Benchmade. Many knife companies make a “trainer” version of the Balisong, with unsharpened blades, which will permit you to safely practice opening and closing the knife. I suggest you obtain one of these before you start “playing” with a sharp version of this knife.

I figure if I leave the butterflies alone and keep my distance that I will not need to concern myself.
Oh! A butterfly knife? Ah. Dangerous toys meant for showing off like a trick yo-yo. Give me a good sturdy 6 inch military blade with a proper hand guard. By the time some wannabe Kung fu fighter whips out their silly toy and does their little parlor trick I have already cut the tendons under their wrists with one unbroken movement from sheath to arm.
That’s my opinion of butterfly knives.

They are fun to play with and good ones are great collectibles. They are utterly useless, though.

My opinion on butterfly knives is that the are a cool blade to have in your collection but not a good blade to have as a everyday carry.

I like them, as far as Folders go they can have a very strong lock second to a fixed blade, assuming a good design and after that they are like all tools and weapons, subject to the users skills and tactics, being showy with a Butterfly knife is totally not required for use, but it is fun to pass the time with and has it’s own rewards.

Balisongs are fun to mess with. If you can learn to handle one well, they can be beautiful to watch. A skilled person with a balisong is an impressive sight. I don’t think it’s a terribly practical knife to carry for several reasons, the biggest being that many areas make it illegal to carry one. Even in some jurisdictions where they are technically legal, many LEO’s don’t realize that, so you could find yourself arrested and severely inconvenienced even if it is determined that you were within the law. I also think they are a little too showy for general use and carry, and flipping one around in public can be an actual safety hazard.
But, they are still fun to play with.
