The Bowie knife was used long before it gained that name. In the dark room knife fight. Basicly it is a bullock knife with no drop to the blade. I will assume it was used same as a bullock knife with the 18 to 24 inch blade. Firm handle. 3 rivit, full shank. Going to a flat blade. To use as a draw knife. For fitting bamboo or wood together fast for a shelter & other. Then a slight outward curve to the blade. For chopping vines & going up coconut trees to drop frods & coconuts. A hacking blade. Then to a point to stab & drop if needed enraged water buffalo if you are working with them. So a good knife around cattle to have. When used for hacking they leave a bloody mess fast. Not like a thin machety. The blade is thick 1/4 inch steal. For weight. Think of a hand ax attack. In a fight. The point need tryangled on them to help slip between bones. They are your heavy knife in field. Hunting knives were your short knives with curved blade for skinning & gutting. Your long thin heavy knive is for sticking the animal in the heart vien to bleed it out before butchering. Many of your knifes on the frontier were made of saw blades. As saws wore out. Could not be sharpened more & the teeth reset. The saw blades were snaped into the shape of the blade you wanted. You need know how to do this. & todays steel does not work well. Then filed to shape for the knive you wished. Long or short. Kitchen or field work.

Thick blade profile for batoning (cutting wood by hammering the back of the knife into the wood), long for penetration and designed to be a good skinning knife. They’re not great at anything but dependable for everything. Rather boring tbh
