What is the size of a machete blade? Blade lengths, widths, thickness and shapes vary greatly depending upon what the machete is most intended to be used for. Personally, I don’t consider anything with a blade length less than 20″ to be classified as a machete, they are “knives”. EG: Cane knife, beet knife, corn knife, field knife, etc. Machetes are primarily intended to be used for swing chopping/cutting, though a good machete will function from being tomahawk to planer to scraper.
Machetes come in various sizes depending on the tasks you will use them for. Most of mine are around 18″ but a few are 12″ and a couple are 24″. If you count other similar tools such as parangs or bolos I have a few even shorter, maybe in the 9–10″ range.
The term “machete” was applied to a specific style knife with a blade normally 18 to 24 inches long, sometimes shorter, and less than 1/8 thick. Unfortunately the name has been applied to almost any large knife that can be used to clear brush. The bolo, parang, golok, cane knife, and like I are not machetes, though they are often referred to as such and included in pictures as “types of machetes”. I disagree with the picture below.
The one labeled “latin” is a machete and the only one in the picture. The others (not shown to scale) are as named.
