Technically, these knives are made for self-defensive fighting. The knuckle rings will keep someone from dropping the knife in various situations. They might also provide a little bit of defense against some slashes by other knives. I don’t know whether they are really that effective as brass knuckles, but that’s considered another use for them. They were used a bit for trench warfare in WWI, but I don’t remember reading that they were truly more effective than other knives. Soldiers improvised a number of weapons for trench warfare of that time.
In modern times, I think most are bought by people who think that these knives look cool. I’m not sure how many are really quality knives. In a fight, I don’t think one of these knives would compensate in any way for greater skill of an opponent.

The knuckle knife is a force multiplier, designed to give the user the ability to inflict more damage on his opponent than the opponent can inflict on him. In defensive use, the goal is to stop the opponent from attacking, however the knuckle knife is much more effective as an offensive weapon, in ambush, to encourage the unarmed opponent to surrender.
