Most “cool knives” are silly. Pretty much every fantasy blade in every comic book, replicated by various companies and smiths around the world is useless. They make teenage boys break out in an acquisitive sweat, and that’s about their only function.
A knife is a blade, a handle and possibly a guard. That’s it. A GOOD knife is made from great steel, that sharpens easily, keeps an edge, and takes a certain amount of abuse without being damaged.
A GREAT knife is one built to specific needs. I have a chef’s knife made in Portugal with a molded plastic handle. It is great. It is better than my and my friends’ trophy blades from Japan and Germany. It’s balanced, cuts beautifully, holds its edge, and sharpens in seconds.
If you want to talk about weapon knives, the cultures where they are used, tend to make them pretty basic. Thai butterfly knives for example, don’t have much to them. The worship of the Katana and Wakizashi is really overdone, but if you look at historical versions of these blades, you’ll know they are straight forward blades – blade, handle, and guard.
Probably the coolest knife I know of is the Swiss Army Rescue Tool. As the Victorinex says, “we hope you never have to use, but when every second counts…”

If you’re going to buy only one knife this is a good choice. I’m a huge fan of the picnicker myself.

The coolest feature of cool knives is their ability to fill the user with a little bit of joy and excitement each time the knife is picked up. It doesn’t have to be a finely crafted work of art featuring an exotic steel, nor have any major historical significance beyond what it holds for the owner. Looking back in time, I think the coolest knife I ever owned, and one that I wish I still had, was a cane knife that my grandfather, who sharpened and maintained sawmill saws, made for me from a huge bandsaw blade. He left one of the teeth as the top hook. That was cool!
Today I have more than 200 knives and each one has its own little bit of “cool factor”, some much more than others, of course.
