A Smatchet is a type of leaf-bladed knife initially designed by W E Fairbairn, who also designed the Fairbairn-Sykes Commando Dagger. The WWII version was heavy and I think it had a single edge. According to an article I read back in the early 1990s the name came from combining the words sword, machete, and hatchet, the tools and weapons it was intended to replace. A later WWII version was called the “Fair Sword.” Eventually Rex Applegate designed the Applegate-Fairbairn Smatchet which is a lightweight double-edged chopping knife. There is a small hole one one side so the user can distinguish between each side in case he wants to use one side and keep the other side sharp for emergencies. I have the standard version of the Applegate-Fairbairn Smatchet made by Boker. Reproductions of the original Smatchet and the Fair Sword are available and Cold Steel also made a Smatchet Machete which is a machete shaped like a Smatchet.
