The “tang” is the part of the blade which connects the blade to the handle. As you might expect, this connection can be the weakest part of the knife. Some knives (particularly hollow handle knives) just attach the handle to the blade (no tang). This is very weak. Some knives use a “partial tang” which sticks into the handle “some”. Better, but still not as strong as possible. A full tang knife has the tang extend all the way through the handle and is best if you are going to stake your life on the knife.
