Given someone a knife is a symbol of respect trust and friendship. Warriors were presented a blade from the black smith of the clan. They wished to join when they proved themselves by accomplishing difficult task each member of the clan than voted the outsider in to become a member of there brotherhood . During the swear in ceremony the person had to prick there finger and stamp there blood onto a rite promising they would always bare alliance to the clan and never break those rules if they did the punishment was that they had to commit suicide with there own blade if the clan leader liked the person enough someone could assit them in there death meaning a fellow clans member was allowed to ease there suffering by killing them . If someone stoled something they had to cut off the there finger put it in a medicine bottle and present to the clans member and beg for forgiveness. Those tradions are still practiced by the Samurai & Yakuza . In the United States Marine Corps an Enlisted Marine earns there Saber Sword by completing the Corporal’s Course to become a E-4 Corporal while an Officer earns the Mameluke Sword by completing OCS — Officer Candidate School or ROTC — Reserve Officer Training Core to become a 0–1 2nd Lieutenant.

I used to play cards with a couple and the man sooner or later would make a play that would get his team set. You win at something because you either play better or you take advantage of your opponent’s mistakes. So to speak this guy would slit his own wrist sooner or later. Self defeating. We would kid and when he would mess up we would say “Hand him a knife”.
Giving someone a knife is saying that sooner or later going by past history you expect that person to do something that will hurt themself or mess up a good thing they had going.
Or that’s the way I understood the saying.

You recently picked one up at a yard sale and have a grandson you’re going to see soon. So you give it to him, because that’s what grandpas do.
Nevermind that he has no need for a rather large, serrated knife with the words “US Army” engraved into the blade…
While you’re at it you can give him a shotgun that you’ll then want back a year later. You’ll ask for it back and feel guilty so you have…

I have given knives as birthday, graduation, and even wedding presents before. To me they’re some of the most beautiful and useful tools that have ever been created. Every one I have ever given has been received well.
Knives have stigmas attached to them, so people experience socially conditioned fears when seeing or handling them. Children who grow up in environments where knives are commonplace and are taught how to use them, no longer have irrational fears about inanimate, edged objects.
I would recommend asking yourself how the knife would be received if you gave one. Some people aren’t interested in them at all and wouldn’t appreciate it.
Most likely…in this day and age…giving someone a gift like that wouldn’t go over well purely because the majority of the population is easily offended/frightened/unthankful/emasculated.

In some cultures a knife will sever a friendship. Perhaps superstitious but the work around is to offer it for a fair price like $1.
In other contexts it is a positive gift. A new bride needs to cook so kitchen stuff that includes a modest set of knives is welcome. Clearly they must reciprocate and invite you back for a meal to balance their luck. Bringing something to a holiday table pot luck counts as payment in full in my mind.

One interpretation of “giving someone a knife” is that you are wishing that bad luck will come to them. It would depend on the culture context of this action or statement to properly understand the person’s intent.
