I began my Filipino martial arts (FMA) training with Doug Marcaida over 20 yrs ago. He was already “Forged in Fire” back then.
I was fresh off the heels of international competition, and they wanted me to join their Pekiti Tirsia/Kali fighting team. One of Doug’s advanced students swapped videos with me —their competition footage for mine.
They wanted me on their team after only about 6 weeks of training! I was like, “What are you, crazy?”
I have to say, after seeing their fight footage, I was understandably apprehensive.
Honestly, it looked like some sketchy underground fight club with rattan sticks, hockey gloves, and fencing helmets.
I was already impressed with Doug through-and-through. By then, I had seen the best the world had to offer, and he stood out to me as a rare kind of talent in the martial arts realm of fighters. Especially regarding his skillset with weapons. I was indeed awestruck by him.
As a weapons expert myself, Doug’s camp introduced me to an entirely different way of fighting. I was already exceptional with various weapons—especially the Bo-Staff and Nunchaku (nunchucks), but what they were doing was something else; something exotic and rare, yet, practical, and far superior to anything I had seen before.
I was instantly hooked.
Although, I’ll never forget, what I saw on that video wasn’t for the faint of heart. It was a full-contact fight with sticks, that, if disarmed, turned into an MMA-esque no-holds-barred fist-fight.
Mind you, this was before Doug’s full on obsession with the karambit.
To be blunt, Doug could shred you drunk with his eyes closed like New Year’s Eve confetti. No exaggeration.
Most trained martial artists would fall to his blade in mere seconds, forget your average person.
It’s only been in the last 6 years or so, that I’ve leveled up to the way Doug was swinging a rattan stick 20 years ago. To imagine Doug with a blade going against your average street-punk….
All he would have to do is get his hands on you. From there, he could literally do it blind folded.
He’s that good. No kidding.
Not even this guy wants it with Doug Marcaida.

I really don’t believe that “average people” try to engage strangers in knife fights. And if we accept that hypothetical, do we have to assume he’s also looney enough that Marcaida can’t talk him out of it? I assure you, no matter how upset I am with Doug Marcaida, I believe he has a good chance of talking me out of starting a knife fight with him.
But a person who is capable with knives, like Marcaida, if attacked by someone with a knife, may inflict multiple lethal stabs and cuts in quick succession because their objective is to make the person stop attacking as quickly as possible. The attacker may not live long enough to see the inside of an ambulance.
Best case scenario, Marcaida lands one or two eye pokes and the guy, being an “average guy” rather than a homicidal lunatic, screams, stops, drops the knife, clutches his face, and well I guess he’s blind now.

Well, no way to answer this. No matter how well trained a person is. Knife combat is very brutal, bloody and 99 % of the time “Both” will be cut. The one that walks away in the better condition is usually determined by the one that doesn’t go into shock the quickest. I personally would not attack this man with a knife but still. That doesn’t mean that someone couldn’t get the better of him with an Edged Weapon.
