it sounded like he was speaking with big wet hairy southern balls in his mouth. though I’m not from the south and I probably can’t tell you what the difference is between a lousiana and a mississipi accent… I’ve heard enough southern talk for my ears to prick up on anything awkward, and it just sounded like craig was trying so hard… But maybe that was the director’s intention… Chris Evans does make note of it in one of his lines calling it a foghorn accent or something. But personally, unless this accent butchering is obviously intentional with a comedic intention like will ferrell doing sherlock in Holmes and Watson, I find it a little distracting because I’m constantly checking to hear something european slipping through the words… Tom Hiddleston in I Saw The Light doing Hank Williams was another weird one for me, but it sounded more natural than craig’s bit. It just makes me wonder, ‘why choose a brit when we got so many home grown southern dudes who can rock the accent ten times better?’ But the movie was still great! Really enjoyed it!

As someone from the deep south (SC) it was really too distracting for me too even finish the movie. I love DC but his accent in this was not good at all.

It’s called a “cornpone” accent. It’s unreal in that nobody talks that way nowadays. Maybe never did. But it was fun.

At first it was bothersome. But then realizing it was meant to be a bit over the top I got use to it. It’s a really fun and well done bit of cinema.

Not bad, actually. Some southerners would notice the nuances wouldnt be quite right, but otherwise it was fine.

With the caveat that I am not from anywhere in America where people are even rumored to speak the way that Craig did, I enjoyed his performance. The thing about accents is that they are really about the actor’s charisma. When we talk about doing an accent in a movie, we’re usually talking about authenticity: did they sound like a real Scotsman, New Yorker, Rwandan hotel manager, etc.
The thing is, most of us haven’t spent enough time in that place to know – really, really know – what is authentic. For every mark of authenticity, there is the exception: the Texan who doesn’t like brisket, the New Yorker who hates bagels, etc. But in real life, these things only make them more authentic. And an accent isn’t one thing, it’s a multitude: the words you use, the way you say them, the way you stand, the way you smile (or don’t). So for every fault you can find with an accent’s portrayal (“no one from Indiana would ever say that”) there are a dozen other things that fit nicely. It’s like asking what the color blue is. We know what is blue and what is red. But where does blue end and purple and red begin? That’s harder.
This is a long way of saying that what makes a character believable (authentic) has a lot to do with the charisma that the actor conveys. The ease with which he or she inhabits the unique creature whom we might characterize as a Southern gentleman or a New York mobster. That’s not easy, of course. Craig’s character was a classic eccentric detective and his accent was a big part of that. So he needed to make that persona visible without making it distracting. Tough balance.
In Daniel Craig’s case, I thought he did a great job. I watched Knives Out on a plane and admittedly didn’t have huge expectations. It starred two actors I associate with action movies, trying to do drama. That doesn’t usually end well. But I’ve gotta say that Craig (and Chris Evans) were the best parts of this movie. I of course knew him as James Bond, the consummate Englishman, and at first it seemed like a bit of a gag that here he was in a Bond-worthy suit speaking in this slow drawl. But in the end I think he owned that part.

Q: What do Americans think of Daniel Craig’s accent in the movie Knives Out?
I thought the film was okay but I thought his accent was the best part of the film. If I hadn’t know that Craig was British, I likely wouldn’t have reacted that way.

It’s a little goofy and over-the-top (intentionally so, I think, after all it’s openly mocked in the movie with Chris Evans’ character comparing him to Foghorn Leghorn), but I got used to it.
