Thank you for your kind words. As a Persian, it makes me happy to know that others are interested and display a sense of appreciation for my culture.
Now, to say that Persians are obsessed with dancing would be an understatement. Persians have a rich tradition regarding dancing, a tradition that dates back many thousands of years ago. Dance, known as ‘Paikubi’ in Persian, was a well-respected and cultured art that developed over the period of many years and helped shape Persian and broader Iranian identity. During times of cultural festivities where Persians gather in the company of their families and friends and celebrate festivals such as Yalda night (the winter solstice), Mehregan (the autumn equinox), Nowruz (the spring equinox and the Persian new year), or any auspicious occasion , Persians will sing and dance to traditional folk music and reminisce the good times and future ahead.
The art of Persian dances was well-established during the periods of the Achaemenids, Parthians and Sassanians. It was a significant form of art that was incorporated into religious and cultural ceremonies performed at the Shāhs (king) court. Persian dances reached the pinnacle of cultural sophistication particularly during the the Sassanian period.
There are many different variations of Persian dances that have become quite widespread in terms of their popularity and influence. However, traditional or classical Persian dances are my favourite. Classical Persian dances often entail the conveying of old Persian myths and literary. The dances are performed based on the dastāgh (the Persian modal system) and are defined through the graceful movements of the upper body, characterised by intricate gestures of the arms and hands. The motion of the feet is also delicate, often likened to mimicking the movements of a butterfly ( Parvāneh پروانه in Persian).
