  2. Yes. I have some heavy pans, I also have some cheap light pans. I can use a pan for years and it can still be flat. My relatives can manage to warp a pan the first time they use it and have ruined several pans on me. They have the nasty habit of turning an element on high heat and setting an empty cold pan on it to “warm up” which is very hard on a pan.
Warping is caused by excessive temperatures on hot elements. Electric elements are the worst because they cause small intense hot spots. These hot spots make the metal in the pan to expand unevenly causing the metal to stretch in some areas and to be shrunk by pressure in other areas. This differential heating causes the pan to buckle and warp. It is usually worse with thinner metal because there is not enough metal to conduct the excess heat away from the hot spots and spread it out through the metal, but even thick pans can be damaged.
High heat is best reserved for bringing large pots of water to boiling because the water takes the heat from the metal very quickly so even thin metal does not get hot enough at any single spot to warp.
Turn the heat down and do not put empty pans on hot elements.

  3. Warping is the result of sudden temperature changes. Even a thin, cheap pan should never warp if you’re using it properly. Or it will warp extremely gradually over a period of time, we’re talking several months here.
When you are done cooking, DO NOT immediately dunk the pan in water and clean it. Take it off the heat and wait like 3 or 5 minutes. When heating a very thin pan over a burner, also make sure there’s always something inside, like oil or something.
Also, keep in mind thin pans are not meant for sustained high heat cooking. Your everyday nonstick $20 pans are not to be taken higher than medium heat and are best for items such as omelettes, crepes, and reheating stuff like fried rice. At most, maybe for cooking some fish fillets. Don’t use them to deep fry anything or sear thick steaks.
