For London at present it is higher, with 132 for ALL of last year across the total of 32 boroughs of London plus the City of London, than Londoners would like. We are always trying to work together to get it down and The Mayor of London has been good at supporting the community in doing this. It still far far lower than a US city that for a sane number of people will have a murder rate that can be even 11 x more, while some US cities are even worse than that! The following graph gives you the true picture.

The bottom line is I am 60, I have walked around major London Towns at 1am to 4am, I am happy for my daughters (I live in London) walk down the streets late at night after school, college, work, out with friends, etc. My wife goes out to meetings late, as do I and we walk, get a bus, leave the car at home!
The USA however – they have guns and it is a lot scarier. They drive everywhere as they trust nobody, hate everyone, they even insult their closest allies with lies – Trump being a prine example! They do not care for their sick with no universal health care. Education quality depends on wealth not ability…. Not a good place to live! They even arrest you for crossing the road the wrong way!
I suppose put things in context – our capital city total murder rate by all means is still less than school shootings in the USA. Probably as a country our rate is lower than school shootings. Although we do have guns in the U.K., we are just careful who we let have the legal ones and the standards of gun keepers is expected to be maintained as high.

On the surface it would seem so. The fact is that in a city of over 8 million inhabitants 132 fatalities is exceedingly low.
However, it makes the news. Why?
Because, it’s shocking to Londoners and UK citizens that even 132 people lost their lives in a violent way. The majority of these cases may indeed be gang related but all lives matter, they were still someone’s brother, son, sister, daughter, father or mother.
It’s not enough to say “gang trouble, they probably had it coming” in a civilised country any needless death is surely one to many.
But to directly answer the question, London, for the majority of inhabitants and visitors is still an exceptionally safe city and as such it’s not a serious concern.

What do you mean by serious?
In London we have had a relative low rate of violent crime. So we take every instance as being serious.
So any increase however small the numbers are, is not something we want or tolerate.
If you are asking is London a safe place to live or visit then the answer is Yes.
