The “ballistic knife”is essentially a gimmick… A Toy. As we say, “Mall Ninja” stuff. (We usually don’t use the word “stuff”….)
Anyway… I had opportunity to examine one years ago before the panicky moves to ban them from import. (They’re Russian)
Big, heavy thing…. With the “sheath” for the blade forming a hefty object that would make a good club all on it’s own.
To use, you took off the sheath portion and pressed the release button. The blade flies out with some force… They will normally penetrate 1/4” plywood at 10 feet or so…. You use the steel sheath to force the blade back into the handle against the very hefty spring.
Here’s a video…. Turn down the silly music:
So, the disadvantages of this device should be obvious…. One shot, and you’re done. If your “target” is wearing a heavy coat or something… Chances are he now has your knife…. And is really pissed….
Now, the “switchblade”. That generally refers to a very specific type of knife, the classic Italian stiletto-style knife:
As the other answer points out, these were often declared illegal (at least to carry) out of panic over 1950s teenage-gang movies and motorcycle-outlaw movies.
In fact, they are rather poor weapons… Often quite fragile and only good for thrusting… As are all stiletto-style blades.
They are popular with collectors… And good-quality ones are still available but there’s a lot of junk.
A better choice is a modern “tactical” folder that’s very sturdy, and just as quick to open as any “automatic” knife. (And, there are a variety of automatic knives of high quality that are much better than the classic switchblade)

A knife that launches a blade is always more dangerous than a simple switch, there is nothing inherently dangerous with switchblades when compared to modern assisted opening knives and their reputation is honestly based off old movies and misinformed politicians.
Don’t believe me then take a look at this blade, you see that little hook on the outside edge? That’s a draw assist hook, it snags your pocket causing the blade to open when drawn and is perfectly legal unlike switch blades.
Here’s after opening
When it comes to knives anyone that says a switchblade is more dangerous is generally talking some shit they heard from an old movie, I own multiple and would rather have my karambit on me for the effectiveness and fast opening than a knife I have to pull out then find the button on. Because of the way it’s designed that Karan it can go from closed in your pocket to tearing someone’s throat open in a single smooth motion

The ballistic knife is “more dangerous” to the user, since it has a much stronger spring. Furthermore, in using a ballistic knife, it is more dangerous to the victim because if you don’t expect it, it’s hard to defend against. On the other hand, it’s not all that effective, and the user is now disarmed and the victim has the knife.
Not that the switchblade is all that dangerous. Many are flimsy, and the blade shape is only good for stabbing, and if it’s flimsy, it could break and then you are disarmed.
