If you like what you are collecting then collecting is not a waste of money.
If instead you don’t really care about the hobby itself and instead just collect items in order to sell them for lots of money in the future, then collecting can and probably will be a waste of money.

No collecting hobby is a waste of money because we collect to get pleasure from the objects we collect. There are aesthetic, innovative, pride of ownership, historical, and sense of accomplishment pleasure. Is any conceivable collection a waste of money?
It depends on how you value your collection.
The bulk of my collection aren’t fancy. They are supposed to be used or to replace a broken or lost one.
I have a few knives in my sights bit they are quite pricey. The cold steel frontier bowie 1917 and the crkt clever girl. The bowie will probably be more use than the CG, but I want them both.
Some might see mine as a waste since they won’t increase in value over time, and that’s fair.
Proper collectors will buy limited editions with some high end steels, grip plates, blade styles, etc.
These will increase in value over time and will still be in mint condition.
Not unlike toys still in their box.
I can’t find it in me to spend a lot of money on a tool that won’t be used, to just be displayed. The exception would be swords for display, but they must be functional, ready for a fight. I will not buy a faux katana or cutlass that will break at the hilt on the first swing.
