Last year, I found that a discount store was selling high-end brands of stainless-clad heavy copper pots and pans, for 50–60% off. I bought 6 pieces, at around $100 each: Three big All-Clad frying pans, a big All-Clad saucepan, a bigger Ruffoni saucepan, and a very big Ruffoni Kettle.
I knew I liked All-Clad’s expensive aluminum-sandwich stuff, but I’d long wanted their much more expensive copper-sandwich pans, so as to be able to put them in my dishwasher. Being a single parent, I really wanted the extra convenience, but also as a single parent, I didn’t want to pay $250 for each piece. So when I stumbled on a few shelves full, I pounced.
I’m amazed by how much easier it is to cook with copper pans. They just don’t get hot spots, so it’s harder to scorch the food. I particularly like to make pancakes for my kids in the largest All-Clad skillet, maybe 15″ across. Cooking over a high gas flame, the whole bottom of the pan gets to the right temperature for cooking pancakes, and I can cook six or seven 4″ pancakes at the same time.
Likewise, for making a dark gumbo roux, a thick copper pan on a medium flame heats the whole roux evenly, so my stirring doesn’t need to be so hurried. And after dinner, I’m not scrubbing pans in the sink.

Is it ever a good idea to buy pots or pans from stores like Ross or Marshall’s?
Thanks for the A2A but I have never set foot in either of the stores listed, so I’ll refrain from comment on them in particular and just stick to the pots and pans.
Me personally, I have collected most of my pots and pans from yard sales and flea markets. My most-used alumi-clad stainless steel stock pot was salvaged from the scrap iron yard. I got a small iron-alum-clad bottom induction rated stainless steel saucepan with steaming inserts at a yard sale for 50¢ that sold new for $45. I picked up a near complete set of copper-clad Revere Ware stock pots at a yard sale for $15. Also got a $28 commercial-grade alumi-clad stainless saucepan at the thrift store for $3. Those are just some of my latest finds.
In other cases, I wanted a stainless steel roasting pan big enough to make two turkeys at a time, so I built it myself. Except for one very old extremely heavy gauge oval stainless steel roasting pan with a tight-fitting lid that I got from a yard sale for $1, all my smaller stainless roasting pans are steam table pans because they’re much better than anything sold in stores.
The only ones I can think of that I purchased new are my carbon steel woks and they only reason is because the price I paid for them ready to go was cheaper than what I could have purchased a sheet of steel for to make my own. The came from the man who manufactured them, not a store. I don’t really have anything against stores, I just prefer pieces over sets and mostly keeping things out of landfills. – MarkKw

Is it ever a good idea to buy pots or pans from stores like Ross or Marshall’s?
Absolutely. Just shop carefully. I’ve seen Le Creuset, Cuisinart, Lodge, and others at Marshall’s. Especially after the holidays.
And both will sell some discontinued items. Doesn’t mean there was anything at all wrong with the pots, just that the company decided to change the style or something. I picked up some stainless steel Oneida saucepans at Ross and a Tramontina dutch oven at Marshall’s.

I bought a Lodge cast iron pan a thin Marshall’s. It was a good deal, like six bucks, and I have no regrets.
Consider the quality and amount of value an item brings to you, not just where you buy it.

If the price is right for what you are specifically looking for, why not? It is doubtful you will find that though.

I can’t speak for Ross, since I don’t work there. But at Marshall’s you can most certainty trust it. Our pots/pans are brought to the stores new. The reason they are cheaper than retail value is because of how Marshalls buys excess product in bulk for a deal. If you are not satisfied with your pot we have a 30 day return policy as long as you yourself didn’t do anything to it. We accept returns after 30 days too and without a receipt. But, for a faster return and to get it back the way you paid (instead of a merchandise credit), we recommend returning with the receipt before the thirty days are up.

Your cook wear is very important. It’s worth paying a bit more to have high quality. The brands that I’m aware at Ross and Marshes seem to be ok, I’m not sold in its quality. I suggest buying from Amazon. They carry most of the better brands like Cuisenart, T-Fal, and Lodge cast iron.

Even if you can’t buy a large set at one time, just go a piece or two at a time. They may not be a set, but it’s more important to impress with taste than style!
Thank you for the a2a!

You can buy them from wherever you like, some stores carry better quality than others. If you want pots and pans that will last a lifetime, I suggest spend some money and buy a set of cast iron.seasoned properly they will out last you. I have a chicken fryer and a large frying pan that belonged to my great grandmother.

I bought some pans at Marshall’s when I had to set up a temporary place when I moved for a new job. They’re Wolfgang Puck branded and are pretty good but a bit unusual and I can see why they ended up at Marshall’s. If you know how to tell the difference and want something cheap to get by Marshall’s can be ok. It’s a bit of a crap shoot though since it’s mainly surplus and discontinued items.
I don’t know Ross but I thought they were a mid range department store. I would not look for pots and pans there.
If you want top quality that will last two or three lifetimes then stick with the top brands.
If you want top quality but want to save some money and don’t mind used cookware there’s alway eBay. The top quality stuff cleans up well (like new if you want) as long as it hasn’t been abused and will last many times longer than the cheap or the mid range stuff.
Another brand to consider is Misen. They are new and direct online sales only (I think). Their knives are amazing. Great quality and fantastic feel and function. I haven’t tried their cookware but if it’s up to the standards of their knives it could be the best deal going.
