This is a matter of taste, and what you want out of life. Whitehorse will have a BC connection, YK has an Alberta connection (roads, schools). Whitehorse is situated in the mountains with a river (which some people love). YK is situated on one of the worlds largest lakes. They’re two very different places! The commonality ofc will be the cold weather and crazy swings in sunlight. 🙂

Whitehorse, without a doubt.
I grew up in Fort Smith, NWT, and moved to Whitehorse when I was sixteen. Whitehorse has much milder winters, since we’re protected by the mountains, while Yellowknife is constantly getting hit by wind off of Great Slave Lake. The winter sports are better too, we have a ski hill, as well as a lot of cross country ski trails, with good skidoo riding available in the nearby mountains.
One real difference is that there are so many more places close to Whitehorse that are worth driving to. If you want to go for an afternoon drive to grab a coffee or a cinnamon bun, you can drive to Carcross, or a lodge; if you want to see the ocean, Skagway is just on the other side of the mountains, with a beautiful road through the pass. In the summer, Dawson City is something to see, and both Dawson and Teslin have music festivals that people fly in to attend.
The populations of the two cities are quite different. Speaking in terms of ethnicity, the NWT are 50% Aboriginal, 45% white, with every other ethnic group falling into the remaining 5%. In contrast, Yukon is only 25% Aboriginal, 70% white, and again, only 5% of the population doesn’t fall into one of those two categories. If you’re from elsewhere in Canada, Whitehorse is likely to feel more like home, at least initially, than Yellowknife is, though both will seem strange, at first. A lot of Yukoners are “granolas”, hippies who like canoeing, wearing comfortable, breathable, all-natural clothing, and eating granola. On a related note, marijuana is easier to find (and grow) in Whitehorse than in Yellowknife, and it’s significantly cheaper.
At the end of the day, just about anything positive that can be said about Yellowknife also applies to Whitehorse, while Whitehorse has its own unique benefits. As a parting gift, I’ll leave you with urban dictionary’s top definition for Yellowknife, still one of the funniest pieces of prose I’ve ever read: Urban Dictionary: yellowknife
Perhaps not entirely accurate, but it was definitely written by some who’s seen it first hand.

I’ve only been to Yellowknife, for a week-long mid April visit to friends living on Armed Forces base housing…I loved it. Gladly move there. Currently I live not too far from the Niagara US border.

Perhaps the writer of this question should find a map. Yellowknife and Whitehorse are both part of Canada, which in turn is a very large country. Please identify which part of Canada you are referring to and I will try to answer your question.

Whitehorse personally, but both have their strengths and weaknesses. More a matter of personal choice and lifestyle than anything else.

I lived in both but whitehorse for short period time due to housing shortage. I left the north dozen years ago. Loved my 15+ years in YK. If I had a chance I would move either city in a heart beat… praying for opportunity to live retire jn Whitehorse

Both are great places to live if you went there with a job. Neither are places you go without a job given the cost of living.
Whitehorse has a milder climate than YK. Whitehorse also feels more like a southern city to me compared to YK.
Rent is more expensive in YK as well as most cost of living drivers compared to Whitehorse.

I’ve lived in both Yellowknife and Whitehorse. I have been back to Yellowknife after being back to Whitehorse to live. I prefer Whitehorse but probably because I have lived here longer. They are both great cities, I just prefer the Yukon overall.

Lived in both Yellowknife and Whitehorse – both have their positives, both are very community oriented, and both are great places to raise families.
Personally, I marginally prefer Whitehorse, but the margin is weather based. Yellowknife winters are tough.

I’ve lived in both of the provinces. I would recommend you Whitehorse over Yellowknife any day. Yellowknife is really concentrated while Whitehorse is a bit spread out. If you’re in Yellowknife, there are a very few things to do in terms of activities but in Whitehorse you can ski, hike, camp and do various other activities. Yellowknife beats Whitehorse in the intensity of Northern Lights. But apart from northern lights there are many rivers, lakes and mountains to watch in Whitehorse. The winters in Whitehorse are milder as compared to Yellowknife.

Whitehorse! Absolutely, positively and certainly. Experience dog sledding/mushing, ice fishing, snow shoeing and of course the Aurora Borealis. Lovely people, great outdoors. Cannot be beaten!

Whitehorse, for sure. I went to school there, met my husband, all three kids born there. Left in 84, because we wanted our kids to know what the “outside” was all about. One son is desperate to go back, our eldest. He married a big city girl, and she has no desire to live in the North. Their life, their choice. After all these years, I still have friends there. We phone and visit as often as we can. In the big city, we were lucky to meet our next door neighbours, let alone actually speak to them.

I can’t speak for Yellowknife but I did spend a few days in Whitehorse. It’s a lovely little city with unlimited outdoor recreation (hiking, camping, etc.) all around it. I would be OK with moving there, if that’s where my life headed. On the other hand, it’s a days drive to pretty much anywhere, and, cold AF in the winter 😉

Mountains or no mountains is the question. Whitehorse=mountains. Yellowknife=no mountains.
It’s been said that Yellowknife is the New York City of the north and Whitehorse is the Los Angeles. Which do you prefer?
