Realistically, it is better to not spend your money on expensive items in the game as trading and the market isn’t what it used to be.
That being said, if for some reason you really want to spend a lot of money on coloured pixels (trust me, I have too) then I would personally go for a knife. They are more famous and a little more sought after.
It is a preference at the end of the day though.

It depends on personal preference. Although people tend to notice knives more than gloves. Flashy.

I’d recommend going for the knife if you’re on a budget. Cheap gloves look like garbage.
Find a community server where you can switch and pick knife or glove skins. Test them out. Find out what you like.
As for public opinion, majority of the CS:GO community chooses knives over gloves. Myself included. The general rule is knife first, glove later.

You get absolutely no advantage whatsoever in-game; it’s all cosmetic to make your character look different. You’d be spending real money for fake items that ultimately offer nothing in return.
