My mother believed that it was indeed bad luck to give a knife or knives as present of any kind. It’s an old belief or call it a superstition that the old folks had and that went back for many years. My memere used to tell us all about it and then some . And stories, some of those stories were quite frightening. Fairy tales. I hope
If you give a knife or knives to someone it is believed that:
A. That you are wishing them a short life, as the knife will cut the thread of that person’s life. So, no knives for your birthday. Unless you give dimes to go with it. Why? Who knows, but dimes are supposed to be very lucky.
B. Whatever you hold dear will be cut away from your life. That can be your family, money, health, good luck or whatever ( but it will increase your bad luck I supposed). If anyone gives a knife or knives out of the blue watch out!
C. You happened to receive a gift of knives for wedding gift then someone is telling everyone that you wish that couple will not have a good marriage. The bride and groom that just got married, now have a knife that will sever that matrimonial knot in half.
My mother said that if you gave a knife or knives to anyone for whatever reason, you have to give dimes also. Nice shiny, silver dimes. For some reason that cancels any of the bad luck. This is interesting take on the knife affecting something negative.
Now if you are or someone close to you is in pain, you are supposed to put a knife under the mattress to cut the pain. Put a knife at the door step ( you hide it or bury it) to cut the feet of any witch, devil, goblin and whatever. You are supposed to be the only one that knows where that knife is buried or hidden.
If you are having a gambling party at your house, put that knife where your guests have to step over it. That will cut his or her luck in half. Again do this so none’s the wiser but you. You will have that guest’s good luck since it’s your home.
Knives have a lot of folklore and superstitions that surrounds them. It’s quite interesting. I enjoyed answering this question. It bought back a lot of memories.
