If it is what you have in an emergency better than a sharp stick but just barely remember your best self defense weapon is awareness, eyes up, head on a swivel ,get your face out of your damn phone! The best way to end confrontation is to avoid it, on the other hand you are planning to defend yourself with three and a half inch knife I would suggest you plan better !
Wanbasion Black Stainless Steel Knife Set, Sharp Kitchen Knife
While at sea old sailors would cut the cuticles on their thumbs and every day they would work them back with sharpened sticks to make their thumbnails grow thick and hard. As the ship approached port, the sailors would carefully shape and sharpen their thumbnails into what was called a “Bosun’s Port Knife” because ahead in next port of call the authorities would check every sailor for a knife or gun as they disembarked for the bars and houses of ill repute. Being forced to leave their real knife the thumbnail was never checked. Get into a fight and the “Bosun” could slice a jugular vein in a second with a fist that seemed to be missing their jaw as the thumb did it’s deed to many a drunk fighter. Likewise, the folding Claw Knife or Karambit knife can be very dangerous to a bad guy in the hands of a trained defender. In fact, any knife in the hand of an untrained defender can be far more dangerous to self than the culprit. Knowing the defensive moves, knowing where the potential for the greatest harm can be delivered, those are the most important tools you need. The knife has some to do with it, yes. But he more valuable is you and your training.

A small knife can be a deadly weapon if you know how to use it.
It has basically no defensive value whatsoever. You would be better off with an empty hand if defense is your goal.
Your mouth and mind, followed by your feet are the greatest defensive tool.
Just don’t be where the violence is.

Ever heard the phrase “ it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog”. A 3″ blade in the hands of someone determined and trained with a blade is a very lethal combination.
ALBATROSS EDC Cool Sharp Tactical Folding Pocket Knife
Just prognosticating here, but I’m guessing what the poster has in mind is a folder that is legal on a State to State basis. Most have a 3″ law that no matter how ridiculous it is, it will be enough to get yourself in trouble should you wander into the wrong municipality with a knife so much as an eighth of an inch too long . . .
RoverTac Pocket Knife Multitool Folding Knife Tactical Survival Camping Knife
Simple answer is “no”. But the truth is knives in general don’t make good self defense weapons. Knives are good weapons for assassin style murders, and they’re better than nothing in a fight, but the truth is that they’re not really good choices for self defense. For self defense a good stout cane made of hardwood or rattan is a much better choice than a knife.
MOSFiATA 8 Super Sharp Professional Chef’s Knife
Sure almost anything can be used as a self defense tool. Its effectiveness will depend on how intimidated your attacker is by your physical size/demeaner and the damage you could inflect on them with the knife.
IMO any tool that makes the attacker stop and flee has worked as a good tool. A friend of mine is 6′4′’ 260 lbs. and a somewhat menacing countenance, military service tattoo’s and a voice of a ‘’No shit guy’’ when he wants to use it to intimidate. He actually is a very calm, nice guy who would never hurt anyone unless he was attacked first. Most people know better then to risk messing with a person this size. A lifetime working as a block mason builds strength thru out your whole body in ways a work out at a gym can’t match.

I have an EDC ( every day carry ) spyderco 4 inch folding knife that can slice a walnut. 3 inches is kinda small. All you will do with a three inch is piss someone off. Self defense means to neutralize the threat not piss it off.
Spring Assisted Knife – Pocket Folding Knife – Military Style
No.
A knife on 3 inches of length is a short pocket knife without a lot of weapon or space to work with, and some models don’t lock. It’s better than nothing at all, but I won’t say that they’re good for self-defense.
Now, I can’t say that a knife is a great weapon for self-defense of any sort. Knives have a very short range and almost no standoff-distance at all, so this will cause you to get into a close encounter with an assailant. Also unless you’re trained in close-up fighting or self-defense, a knife really can become a disadvantage for you if you try to defend yourself with it.
As with a real weapon regarding of knives, it’s far more effective to go for a big knife like a Ka-Bar…
…or an M9 Bayonet…
…as an example, whereas you have a lot more effective weapon to work with.
The same is with an Italian Switchblade. It looks effective, in the correct context of course. But is this actually a ‘good’ weapon? Would you prefer a big and creepy knife or a little pocket knife to actually mean something to someone trying to assault you? Are you trying to be serious in defending yourself with a knife?
I think there are better options than a small 3 inch folding knife to be honest. A greater and also a bigger weapon has a better performance and is far more effective to scare someone than a small compact folding knife that you commonly keep in your pocket or under your shirt.
Zelite Infinity Damascus Chef Knife 8 Inch, Japanese Chef Knife
I know it. Don’t sound like much but I’d highly recommend getting a minimum of a 3.3 inch blade like an Emerson Cqc7 because it’s only another third of an inch but human tissue stretches so that extra third of an inch will allow deep enough penetration to hit vital organs that’s why most tactical fighting knives are 3.3 inches to 3.5 inches in length another good choice is an Emerson Commander or an Al Mar sere
Mossy Oak Survival Hunting Knife with Sheath, 15-inch Fixed Blade
If the blade s 3” it can actually open someone up. Especially if used by force. If someone pulls a knife on me I’m going to try and put distance from it. The 3” blade can do major damage. 3” isn’t all that small when your talking about cutting.
