The “ka-bar”, with its 7 inch blade, is a little small to be considered a Bowie, though it’s physical appearance is very typical of bowie knives. Bowies, traditionally, have a blade length greater than 8 inches, most commonly 10–12 inches or longer, and incorporate a clip point with a sharpened edge on the swage, on most contemporary blades the swage is a false edge.
Ontario Knife Company is a supplier of knives to the U.S. government. As a Navy diver I often used a “ka-bar” made by OKC, identical to the one on the right in the picture. The knife on the left is OKC’s SP-5 “Survival Bowie” with only a 10 inch blade. (Note difference in size.) All three of these knives have sharpened swages.
