In combat would a person Really put a knife or sword in their mouth? In films pirates swing across with swords in their mouth, swords are not light, Or soldiers crawl across the ground with knives in their teeth, this seems absurd.
You can check the answer of the people under the question at Quora “lips on the tip of a knife“
hi
You are in error. Take the knife for example. There is a blunt side and that is what would be against the face. It would be madness to put the sharp side of the knife against your face, So the soldier crawling with knife in mouth is not at rosk from accidental injury. See?
Best wishes
🙂
Chicago Cutlery Belden 15 Piece Premium Kitchen Knife
If you need two hands but expect to need your weapon shortly, what do you do with it? Say you’re climbing a boarding net… Can’t stick it in your belt; that’s asking to cut the belt (usually just a length of cord or rope) and lose not only your weapon but your pants, as well…
Authentic XYJ Since 1986,Outstanding Ancient Forging,6.7 Inch Full Tang
Bad idea.
I did it in peacetime with a small knife. The blade was sheathed (I am not totally crazy). My hands were full.
Blam. A soldier punched the handle of the knife as a prank. Instant cut on the lip. But it could easily be broken teeth in combat or worse.
The blunt wood or metal is going worsen any facial injury.
And no, I did not report the incident.
Wanbasion Black Stainless Steel Knife Set, Sharp Kitchen Knife
I can’t imagine doing it with a sword. I’ve done it with a knife and thought it was the stupidest things I’ve ever done.
If you can hold a knife in your teeth, you have better teeth than I have. Imagine having to grit down hard on a 3lb piece of steel. Pretty uncomfortable and insecure.
A lot of the weight at either end of the leverage point.
I have done it a bunch of times with a pistol mag. If you are right handed, put the pistol mag in your mouth with the bullets pointed away from you, with the business end sticking out your right side.
To reload your pistol, pop the mag with your right hand, while putting your left pointy finger across your teeth to get your reload.
Fully strip the empty from the pistol, if it’s not already gone.
Aim your pointy finger at the bottom of your right hand, and voila a super fast mag change.
I invented this in 1975 because they left me with a whole bunch of ammo and no spare mag holders. I’m sure it’s been done many times since then.
Sure enough, they banned it in practical matches.

Swinging a sword while holding another in your mouth is indeed absurd, and useless as well. What’s the point, you’re not going to hit anyone with that. Plus, you’re adding an unnecessary weight to yourself.
But crawling while holding a knife with your mouth? It is absurd, but doable, and to a certain degree it does makes sense. If you try to crawl while grabbing something on your hand, you’ll notice that you won’t be able to move easily or at least fast enough, especially since your knife is basically moving back and forth before your face. But if you bite it with your mouth, you can move more freely and faster. Of course, the trick here is either you carry a one-edge knife and bit the spine (make sure your lips don’t get cut, tho), or carry a dual-edge knife and bit the grip, although I would doubt the later would be easy since most knife grips are quite thick.

No, nobody ever did.
Originally the expression “armed to the teeth” was a reference to the river Teith which marked the town limit of Doune in Scotland that suffered such an epidemic of gun violence in the 17th century that the local sheriff banned the carrying of guns in town.
Therefore you could go armed to the Teith , but not on, into Doune.
Spring Assisted Knife – Pocket Folding Knife – Military Style
Pirate swinging sword with mouth: Absurd.
Soldiers crawling with knives in teeth: Not very absurd, though tend to only be done when they need to use both of their hands and keep the knife where they can see it, such as preparing to cut wires.
Smith & Wesson Extreme Ops SWA24S 7.1in S.S. Folding Knife with 3.1in
The answer is ,it’s Hollywood,it’s not real. As Okmar Bapat said, it’s difficult and dangerous to get a good grip on steel with your teeth. You might put it in your teeth to free your hands momentarily, but you wouldn’t crawl or swing from a mast with a knife in their teeth.
ALBATROSS EDC Cool Sharp Tactical Folding Pocket Knife
In battle you do anything that makes sense to you at that given moment.
If you have to for some reason place a knife in your mouth, and climb somewhere, at least you have it easily accessible.
Crawling on the ground with knife in mouth makes sense because your arms are forward and your face too. Quick and easy to get to your knife if needs be.
Tv Pirates, well, they did many things that made no sense, but looks good.
Merry bunch of rascals 😂
