My favorite tool, The Leatherman Wave multitool. So many uses in a small package. Comes with a lifetime warranty. Not cheap, but as they say, “A cheap tool is an expensive tool”. Meaning you’ll have to keep paying for a cheap tool over and over. My Wave is over 25 years old. That’s about $4 a year with many more years to come. I keep it on my belt, and I reach for it constantly.
Consider your options again, and chose your survival knives wisely. Hiking is a lifestyle for me, and with that came my love of collecting survival items. It wasn’t until I visited New Zealand that I discovered how crucial a sharp tool is in the outdoors. I’ve had my fair share of problems with dull knives, and if those problems were a book, it’d be thicker than Bhagwan’s Biography. It takes a long time to locate the right knife, but I only needed a second to find this one ( it’s being given away for free ). It is simple to use and takes up little space. It’s so light that I sometimes forget I’m wearing it. The way I can carve wood and cut rope with this thing makes me feel at ease. There were no issues. This product is amazing.

Tops M1, Midget.
Featured at the top of that picture, That is a stout blade of 1095 steel with a keen edge. It does all the bush-craft one is likely to need on the Appalachian trail without being a pseudo-machete/ Rambo looking thing. You don’t need an “edged weapon on the AT, you need a small, stout utility knife for general purposes. Weight and bulk are your enemies, bigger is not better.
I would not, for example, use that revolver for hiking the trail. It weighs 44 ounces unloaded with bullets (not the whole cartridge even) adding 3.4 oz. . . . over three bloody pounds! I’m not going to go to the trouble and expense to titanium this and lightweight that to get my pack weight down and then strap on that .454! The CZ Rami in .40 weighs about a lb and a half less, offers more capacity/ faster reloads and a more compact package. You aren’t going to be fighting bears, feral dogs and two legged predators are all you need the firepower to handle, realistically. Back on topic, the Tops knife there justifies it’s not very light weight by being able to multi-task, reducing the total number of tools and offering “this ain’t gonna break” reliability. Remember though, two is one, one is none. Could the Tops M1 Midget be used as an “only knife” while hiking the trail? Oh, absolutely & it’d do it well. Should you hike the AT with one knife? Nah. Really. A good quality (not great quality) folder like a Kershaw Dividend weighs in at 2.9 oz and will do most of the tasks you need a knife for while camping, combined with a good titanium spork and you have your eating utensils for example. Trimming a bit of 550 cord, use the folder.

When I solo thru hiked the Appalachian Trail in 1985 and 1987 the edged weapon I took was a Swiss Army knife. Perfect not only for cutting cheese, but also opening a bottle of wine.
You don’t need to take a weapon on the Appalachian Trail. It’s a waste of weight.
