I keep seeing prop 65 whenever I go to buy cookware. Now I see this warning on a vitamin label of all places with an exposure to lead. What does this really mean to a consumer outside of California?
You can check the answer of the people under the question at Quora “california prop 65 approved cookware“
I suppose some people take those Prop 65 warnings seriously. Mike Brandt’s answer looks like he does. No one I know seems to care. They are so overused you just can’t avoid everything with one of those warnings on them. They are a sick joke.

As the poor dork who had to write the safety warnings for industrial chemicals in the early days of Prop 65, in California, I can assure you that a more idiotic bill has never been drafted as an answer to good intentions.
What caused the problems? Terrible wording and …
… lawyers.
Now that Prop 65 is old and grey, the list of abusive lawsuits or just the smell of an impending lawsuit is enough for every manufacturer to slap the label on everything they might ship to California — and they do.
“Baby powder causes (specifically) ovarian cancer.” My god, people.
So what was conceived as a nice health and safety idea has turned into a meaningless monster.
Those labels are now the poster child for “crying wolf.”
Yes, notice them. Think about them. Take them with an entire shaker of salt.

Where you live is of no value to this discussion.
It means that you should consider caution. In my own case, if it has a Prop 65 warning, and the vitamin wasn’t prescribed by a doctor, I’d pass. Frankly, if you’re getting even close to a good diet then you’re usually getting enough vitamins.
Lead is bad in any dosage – there is no real “safe” dosage. The State of California has the strictest restrictions on lead in the nation. Is it safe to take? No – there is no safe level for lead. Is it dangerous? Probably not. Is it health-promoting? Probably not, if your diet is anything other than terrible.
Caveats: During winter months, almost nobody gets nearly enough vitamin D, which we get gobs of in the summer months. Your skin converts sunlight into vitamin D. As a result, there is usually a larger number of people getting colon cancer in springtime, when your vitamin D levels have bee low for many months. Or increase your consumption of mushrooms, egg yolks, and oily fish.
Calcium is a wise idea for seniors.
A lot of women need iron during menses. But increase your fiber intake a bit.
Otherwise, see what your doctor suggests. For most people, the doctor will tell you you don’t need vitamin supplements.

Nothing, actually. It is a reference to California’s Proposition 65, concerning safe drinking water in California. Of course it can be a reminder to the quality of drinking water if seen outside the state…
