How would an AK bayonet be used as a fighting knife? Since it’s meant to have the edge facing upwards, you can’t slash with it.

It really depends on the model.
I had a 1980s model from Polytech and it did not even have a cutting edge. Of course a cutting edge is not needed on a bayonet when it is attached to a rifle.
It wouldn’t have been much of a fighting knife, and without the ability to cut it would have been worthless as a utility knife.
Other models are better.
The AK bayonets I’ve seen have the edge in normal alignment with the handle, so if the edge can cut and you are holding the bayonet as a knife, the edge will be aligned as any normal knife so there would be no special way to use it as opposed to a normal knife.
My suggestion is that if you want a fighting knife, buy an actual fighting knife.

Wrong premise. You can slash with it: upwards. Bad luck if you happen to carry a gun and the guy with the AK closes in: your forearms are completely unguarded, and with a cut upwards, he also deflects you gun upwards. Personally, I think it makes much more sense than to have the blade face down.
As a fighting knife, the most common grips are either a hammer grip (blade outwards, with the pommel at your pinky finger) or a reverse grip (pommel at your thumb), blade either outwards or inwards, depending on your fighting style and the situation.

Not only does the blade face up, but the grip does too:
You can see that when detached the knife will have a very standard grip, much like the M-16 bayonet despite having a different blade orientation when mounted.

It’s really not the slash of a knife that’s kills, it’s the thrust. A slash, even with the wirecutter edge of a ak bayonet will cut the top dermal layers. It makes the other guy back off a bit. Think of a bayonet as a ice pick. Ice picks are not sharp. If someone watches alot of movies and uses it that way, they will get hurt. If a person is coming towards me and has it like a ice pick infront of them, I’m going to have my hands full.
