My advice is that if you find yourself in a position where it is necessary to engage an enemy in a knife fight drop the knife and grab your entrenching tool. Many, many more enemies have been killed with an entrenching tool than with a knife and you are much less likely to get cut up while hacking him to pieces.

All Marines train in tan belt which is essentially white belt in most martial arts. Covered are counters to holds, strikes, basic knife usage and weapon retention to name a few. Unless you have had additional martial arts experience before (advanced) you’re not gonna be some bad ass. The majority of Marines are gonna be at least grey belts which isn’t super advanced in terms of MCMAP.
Grey is still basic but above grey belt. You learn some ground fighting and weapons of opportunities to include using knives, more throws and take downs, etc.
Green is the start of intermediate levels. Ironically, you can also qualify as an instructor and certify people up to green belt. You learn more advanced throws, weapon of opportunity, basic baton, ground stuff and weapon retention.
Brown- you can also be an instructor too. You start to learn the basics of taking on an armed assailant while unarmed. You also cover pistol retention, and group tactics (dealing with 2 vs 1, 1 vs 2, etc.) Some of the moves I learned saved me out on the streets from serious injuries when I was …

This isn’t Universal but for the most part I think most Marines could use a lot more training in that area. It is my opinion that most Marines won’t be in a knife fight. And they are taught hand-to-hand combat when they are they are taught very well but not everybody goes through this kind of training.
