Before James Bond – in both movies and books – there was Simon Templar, the “international man of mystery” who had picked up, somewhere down the road, a pair of knife-scars in the back of his hand forming a cross: hence his nickname “The Saint”. Leslie Charteris’s books were HUGE best sellers, and were turned first into feature films, and then into a TV series (although they’re STILL making “Saint” feature films for European audiences!) The first “Saint” book was published in 1928, the final one in 1997 That’s a HUGE timespan. An Actor who was (let’s say) a plausible 28 years old for the role in 1928 was going to be a seriously OLD man by 1997!! SO Who played “The Saint”? The answer will depend largely on how old you are. To my parent’s generation the answer is probably George Sanders (A serious actor who co-starred with Betty Davis in major movies and provided the voice for “Sher Khan” the tiger in Disney’s “Jungle Book”) although Louis Hayward played Templar on screen in the first few movies, and Sanders just took over the role (And was, in his turn replaced by Hugh SInclair.). For MY generation it’s almost certainly Roger Moore, who played Templar on TV (before taking over from Connery as Bond on the big screen.) Roger Moore in turn got replaced by (Old Etonian) Ian Ogilvy, who turned in Roger Moore’s iconic white Volvo 2 litre Sports for a Jaguar. For my Son’s generation, “The Saint” is probably either Val Kilmer (who starred in the most recent movie) or Roger Moore (who continues to star in the endless re-runs of the 1960’s TV series).
Forget Bond…. Simon Templar is “the chameleon to watch” when it comes to the number of actors to play the role on TV and cinema.

Until Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, 2006, it was quite explicit that they were the same person .
In On Her Majesty’s Secret Service , James Bond, played by George Lazenby, marries Teresa di Vicenzo, who is killed in the last scene of the movie.
In Diamonds Are Forever , James Bond, played by Sean Connery, appears to take revenge on Blofeld for Teresa’s murder.
In For Your Eyes Only , James Bond, played by Roger Moore, puts flowers on Teresa’s grave.
In Licence to Kill , James Bond, played by Timothy Dalton, is said (by his friend Felix Leiter) to “have been married, but that was a long time ago”.
In The World Is Not Enough , it is indicated that James Bond, played by Pierce Brosnan, has “lost someone he truly loved”, which is generally regarded as referring to Teresa.
Personally, of course, I believe that James Bond was captured by the Americans in 1968 or 1969, as described in The Rock … 🙂

They didn’t.
All the Bonds, from Connery to Craig, is supposed to be the same person.
How this is so? Well, the producers lay certain giveaways that ties each actor. For example, George Lazenby’s Bond was tied with Connery’s bond through a scene in OHMSS, where he was cleaning out his office after “resigning” and pulling out old tools used by Connery in his Bond movies.
Lazenby’s Bond meanwhile provides the tie that binds three successive Bonds together – the death of James Bond’s wife Tracy.
In Roger Moore’s Bond, Tracy was referenced twice, in The Spy Who Loved Me and then in For Your Eyes Only’s pre credit sequence.
In Timothy Dalton’s Bond, Tracy was referenced in Licence to Kill.
For Pierce Brosnan’s Bond, Tracy was referenced in Goldeneye.
Now Craig’s Bond is a bit of a difficult thing to place. One, because it’s a reboot of sorts, what with Casino Royale showing Bond’s origins. Secondly, because it involves Judi Dench’s M, which also appears during Pierce Brosnan’s run as Bond.
So, while they did layer references to old Bonds, namely the Aston Martin, it’s hard to put Craig’s Bond in between the other Bonds. Since his origin story was shown, that makes him the first – but then if Connery’s Bonds went after him, there’s an issue with the timeline because M was played by a different person. And that M, Bernard Lee, was around until Moonraker. Brosnan’s Bond could fit in, provided that you believe that his exploits happened after Quantum of Solace but before Skyfall.
As you can see, it’s not exactly well explained.

I don’t think it is ever explained. Given the difficulties in constructing a coherent timeline for all the Bonds, it is probably same to assume that each new actor is casted into a sort of reboot/retcon for the series.

With one exception the movies don’t explain why James Bond 007 keeps changing because he doesn’t. Whether portrayed by Sean Connery or Daniel Craig or any of those in between they all play the same James Bond. It’s your eyes that are fooling you.
The exception is the first Casino Royale which is a comedy. It explains that they have to call back into service the original James Bond 007, now sir James Bond, because the secret service had given his name and 00 number to another agent to maintain the legend but the second James Bond decided that playing in spy movies was less dangerous than being a real secret agent.
Later in the movie sir James Bond 007 decides that all agent of the service will be called James Bond 007 to confuse the ennemy.
The final battle involves cowboys and indians.

Doctor Who was a continuing series, so they had to explain it somehow when the first actor had had enough. Also The Doctor was defined as not human and so might do this.
In a normal series it can be ridiculous, as with the Ewing boys getting a completely different mother during Dallas . Whereas the Harry Potter films got away with a new Dumbledore.

Why should it be ‘explained’? Should it be explained why Ewan McGregor turns into Alec Guinness? The way I’ve always looked at James Bond is that they’re all different characters who happen to have the same name and job, but in a different time. I mean, Sean Connery’s Bond in the sixties is the same age as Daniel Craig’s in the 2000/2010’s, so they must all be different people, like many different actors play Batman and Superman.

There is no internal logic for it. Each time they change the actor it’s a soft reboot of the franchise retaining no continuity between eras.
I mean, otherwise Bond would be geriatric.
There is a fun fan theory that ‘James Bond’ is a codename given to successive agents. But this doesn’t really hold water given that there are also multiple Blofelds with contradictory histories, and there wouldn’t be any reason for multiple supervillains to call themselves Ernst Stavro Blofeld. (I could imagine the CIA could assign the name ‘Felix Leiter’ to an agent in the same manner as Bond, it this theory were true, but it seems unlikely the CIA would have a specialised Bond Liaison.)
Bond is the same sort of character as Batman or Poirot. He doesn’t really age, it’s a ‘shifting present’ that allows for everyone to sort of ignore the reality of time passing as long as we enjoy the character.

It cannot be explained, we’ll all have to assume that James Bond is still the same but it’s only being played by by different actor, or you can also assume it is something like a reboot after a couple of Bond movies played by the same actor.

In On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, the first Bond film without Sean Connery, George Lazenby looks at the camera and says something like, “This never happened to the other guy.”
Until the remake of Casino Royale , the Bond character in the movies was always supposed to be the same person; the fact that there were different actors portraying him was irrelevant. CR was a reboot in that this was supposed to be the story of how Bond first got his double-O number, and none of the other movies were supposed to have ever happened at all (as distinguished from happening some time in the future, as in the Star Wars prequels). Which makes having Judi Dench portray M pretty weird.

Too much thought is put into that . it is one actor leaving the series and another taking over . They stay around the same age no matter what year the movie is made so it is contemporary and relatable. Minor personality differences are because no two actors are exactly the same .It is the same guy though ,in a floating timeline. That was the case till the Daniel Craig Casino royale movie which rebooted the series.Who knows how they will follow up Craig.
The Lazenby breaking of the fourth wall and his other fellow line, obviously refering to the change of Bond actors for the first time ,gets used incorrectly as proof of the code name theory. It was 1969 and studios didn`t get in to complex things like lets make James Bond a code name but not mention it.They just cranked out movies and wanted the Bond films to go on after Connery left.
Take off the tin hats and enjoy the entertanment. Not everything is deep, complex and has deep hidden meaning.

It’s not explained. There is no need to explain. No explanation is required. And no audience has ever asked for an explanation.
Consistency for the sake of consistency – that’s for small minds. I like the character portrayal of Sean Connery, the humor of Roger Moore and the wry sophistication of Pierce Brosnan. When that happens, the winner is the audience.

Well, personally, I don’t think the agent keeps changing. In theory, all the movies are missions which 007 or James Bond has gone on as noted by Skyfall, the movie that I think has the most tip of the hats to the other James Bond movies. If we took a look at On her Majesty’s Secret Service with George Lazenby, we have the James Bond in that Film reflecting upon some of the gadgets and knick knacks he has picked up from earlier missions. Another theory that I’ve heard but not fully support is that James Bond isn’t a name but rather a code name just like 007 and is assigned to an agent as to protect his civilian identity.
