The heavier the knife, the stronger the throw, the further it will go. It would vary person to person just like throwing rocks.

Back when I practiced I could hit the target accurately at 12–15 feet.
I was not actually using throwing knives but instead bo shuriken, throwing spikes, made from large nails. These were approximately 1/3″ thick and 7–8″ long depending on the nail. I cut the heads off, then used a bench grinder to round off that end and sharpen the “sharp” end by making a gradual tapered point. At first they just fell off the wood but when I tapered the point they stuck.
While I tested them on a wooden fence, I actually practiced indoors where I could get a maximum range of 15′. I made a target our of an archery target and set up a plywood backstop, and shelf for the target. I traced a silhouette target onto the archer target.
I practiced 100 to 200 throws a day and could hit the target in the throat 9 out of 10 times at 12 to 15 feet. It really ripped up that section of the target so I had to replace it several times.
My bo shuriken were better than the ones sold in martial arts stores and much cheaper, even considering the price of the grinder. I’m sure the custom versions some makers sell based on museum pieces would be better, but if I had some I’d probably keep them for display and not throw them.

I have thrown up to 3 full spins and 2 1/2 half spins – but only occasionally. I rarely throw farther than these. It takes a lot of energy to throw from these distances. You could ruin your arm if you often throw 3 full pins and 2 1/2 spins.
Note that the number of pitches a professional baseball pitcher make are closely monitored during a game and they are on a pitching rotation.
The farthest I have thrown with no spin is 20 ft. However, Eric Thorne and Houzan Suzuki who are both featured in my book The Art of Throwing throw no spin from farther distances. Houzan gave me a videoclip where he threw no spin from 30 ft.

The farthest I’ve been able to consistently hit a target is approximately thirty feet. Now, some days were better than others but on a good day I could get consistent hits on target. The trick, I found is to have a nice stack of knives at the ready so you don’t move around too much and have to readjust after every throw. Just have a friend there with you to shag all the knives like a bat boy. I have met some old timers who could throw over fifty feet accurately and consistently. Practice, practice, practice. Let us know how it goes.

I’ve never had much luck ‘throwing’ a knife. But only an idiot lets go of his weapon ‘in combat!’ Getting the ‘pointy’ end into the body of an adversary who will probably try to dodge the throw is a lot harder than we all see in the movies. Those special effects guys always make that flipping knife look as accurate as a a crossbow bolt! What we see is some talented super duper Ninja magnifico stick his flying blade into a flat surface that is not moving. I’ve heard ‘experts’ claiming success when they can flip their knife 2 or three times. Who’s got the time to pace off the distance. If I’m in a physical confrontation and have NO firearm, I’m not going to risk ‘throwing’ my last item of defense ‘away.’ But that’s ‘just me.’ And that’s also why I’m still around to talk about it. I hope that helps. Semper Fi!

When I was practicing the spin method my best records were within two spins. Three was fairly decent with certain knives over others.
For three spins I needed a more balanced blade. for two spins I could get away with it on certain blades more than others.
Axes and khukuri’s were a struggle because of the weight imbalance. Quite a lot of fun though.
I didn’t practice no spin very much, I never really invested in a properly weighted bo shuriiken. but short upholstery needles are pretty easy to get down at about 15 feet.
In terms of accuracy when I say fairly decent I mean torso wide targets, head wide targets I would say as good at two spins.
Hitting a balloon wouldn’t have been an issue with two spins when I was on form and maybe 40/60 on three. Now a days though i’d be lucky to get that with same level. I haven’t really practiced in about 5 years any more than random stuff from one spin across the living room.
