Tommy Flanagan grew up in a rough part of Glasgow, Scotland. One night, when leaving a pub after a DJ gig, a gang attacked and tried to rob him. He fought back and was stabbed. The attackers slashed his face from ear to ear, leaving a wound known as a “Glasgow Grin” or “Glasgow Smile”. It was referenced in Sons of Anarchy as part of his character’s backstory.
It was in the hospital while he was recovering from his life threatening injuries that his friend Robert Carlyle persuaded him to give acting a shot.
Mr. Flanagan himself is often questioned about his scarring and has said, “I don’t see the scars anymore. They’re just ancient history now. It was a horrible thing that happened 20 years ago. I don’t give it a second thought. It’s just like a big wrinkle on my face.” (Vulture Magazine, November 2014)
