  1. I almost hate to admit this, but I have done it. While we were at sea, we were at the mercy of untrained volunteer “barbers”, which I hated. I used to kill time honing the edge on my pocket knives and was very proud of their razor sharpness. I actually shaved my face with one just to prove I could. Having done that, I thought that I could devise a make-shift razor comb and trim my hair.
I held the blade and the comb together in one hand with the teeth of the comb extending past the edge of the blade. With the comb side closest to my head, I just passed the comb through my hair and let the knife blade cut away the ends. I won’t say that it did a good job, but it worked well enough to keep me out of the hands of the butchers til we got back into port. (The knife has to be VERY sharp!)

  2. There is no safe way to do this, beyond the usual being aware of where the edge is and moving slowly and carefully. No tricks that I know of. Safest choice, go to a dollar store and buy a cheap pair of scissors. Even bad scissors will do a better job on your hair than a knife, and will do it much more safely. I have never run into a situation where my hair cut needs were so dire I would think to use a knife, rather than wait a day to get scissors and do it that way.
