  1. It’s a common problem:
    How to build a cheap forge that will last
    You can absolutely put something together for under $50. (see the info for the $50 Knife Shop book here [ https://diyblacksmith.blogspot.com/p/toolbox.html ])
    Your basic components are:
    * Enclosed area to contain heat
    * Fuel source
    * A stand to put it on

    Coal forges are easiest to build, but can be hard to keep hot.
    You need:
    * A basin for the coal (old stainless steel sink, brake drum, lawn mower deck without the motor, etc.)
    * A stand to bring it up to waist height
    * Some piping to direct air flow
    * Blow dryer or exhaust fan to push air into the coals

  2. Get a cheap or free brake drum, from a junk-yard, side of the road, local garage. Get some black iron fittings from the hardware store. Fill it full of coal, light it up. Hook up your vacuum cleaner backwards so it’s blowing, and have a ball! Hammers aweigh, Matey! There are a lot of you-tube videos about cheap forges. Most of them will let you have fun, and most will give you a fairly crude product. But you’ll have fun.
    Get an empty Freon can, some hi-temperature fiber insulation and build yourself a “Ron Reil” type burner propane forge. Yes. A little more money, But you have really tight control over your process and your product.
