There are some issues you should think through before pursuing a pocket knife for self-defense.
First, anything you carry in your pocket for self-defense must be removed from the pocket before you can use it. So, are you going to say, “Hey, wait s minute Mr. Attacker, I need to get out my knife to protect myself!”?
Second, self-defense implies you are attacked. You must have a means of protecting yourself in hand before you are artacked. Walking around the streets carrying an open pocket knife is going to create a lot of problems
Third, the use of a knife for self-defense is a misnomer. If you pull out a knife, you change your status from self-defense to attacker.
If you feel the need is that great to protect yourself, consider conceal and carry of a sidearm. Realize even with a hand gun someone can get to you from about twelve feet before you can draw.
Perhaps you should move your residence if it is that dangerous. If your work takes you into dangerous areas, change your job. It is easiest to watch where you go. In seventy years I have never needed to protect myself from an attacker.

You don’t. Pocket knives aren’t good weapons.
That’s a tiny little non-locking blade. It’s not meant for fighting, and it’s terrible at it.
Something larger and locking is better.
But it’s still not a good fighting knife. A good fighting knife is something larger and fixed bladed.
That’s not a pocket knife, but it’s a good fighter. Even better is a dedicated fighting knife.
That’s a fighting knife.
Bottom line, you don’t not use a pocket knife “extremely effectively”.
And if you do want to learn to fight with a knife, you go to a class and get training. You learn armed and unarmed fighting. You commit to months of training before you begin to become proficient. Years before you’re competent.
And if you’re smart, you learn how to avoid a fight before it starts.

I guess my question would be why do you feel you need a pocket knife for self defense? The best way to survive a fight is to not fight at all. Assuming you are an able-bodied individual, letting anyone get within arm’s distance when you have an option to withdraw would be an unnecessary risk. Having said that if you think you’re good enough to fight with a knife, you should be good enough to fight without one.

Everybody else said slipjoint (not-locking) pocket knives are useless for defense. I’ll tell you they are wrong.
First of all defense doesn’t mean knife fighting. Knife fighting is a whole different story.
Defense means a hobo is trying to snatch your wallet or rape you or a drunk just doesn’t like your face.
What you need is to keep the pocket knife at hand (do not extend the hand or he’ll pull it out from the wrist and use the knife against you) and look for quick short cuts to his hands or maybe face. A bit of blood should either make him run or let you run.
Also a knife will have a psychological edge … “I can take the skinny little lady easily” turns to “Ow, if she only touches me with that sharp evil thing it will hurt and bleed, is it worth the risk?”
No you cannot stab with a pocket knife .. but why would you? You probably couldn’t stab an attacker with a stiletto anyway (life is not like in the movies), or he’d turn it against you, or get angry.
Or take it the other way … you really are a real life Arnold in Commando, the ace of knife fighting … you actually outknife the opponent and stab him in heart … enjoy the 25 years in jail for manslaughter.

Everyone has their opinion, but the fact is most everyone carries some type of folding knife these days, so the question is legit.
The best systems I’ve seen so far for teaching a non-martial artist as a down and dirty method of defense with a folder is the “BladeSmart System”.
Its pretty much the bare basics of what I teach in my classes, and the creator of the system also goes into some points of what happens with the law afterwards, which is good info to have.
Last I seen, the BladeSmart video was up on youtube for free viewing. If its not anymore, I’ve seen copies of the DVD for sale on eBay. The creator of the system also use to have some additional training videos up on youtube that are worth a look, that expand some on the basics in the DVD. He also does some stick-fighting and ground fighting stuff.

These are just some thought on this.
Fixating on a single weapon is inherently bad. Take up a martial art and do some body building as they go hand in hand.
Once you are fitter than the opponent, you should be able to outrun him in any situation that would make knife use feasible. A gun aimed at you does not usually allow you to defend against, using any knife, any better than using your hands.
If you are going to use an illegal weapon, you might as well get an illegal gun.
Once you start learning a martial art, you will find that your best defensive weapon is awareness. You will realise you should not do drugs including alcohol, as this dulls awareness. Attacks from behind are quite common. If someone knows that you have a knife, they will try to disable you, before you can pull it out.
I will give you an example of how things can escalate, by describing 3 robberies in three weeks.
First robbery was thwarted by setting off a loud alarm.
Second robbery the next week had a pair come into the store. One started firing his gun immediately at me, while the other ran away with the cash register.
Third week had two more robbers coming in. This time they were met by return fire. In the melee, no one was actually shot as far as I know, despite many shots fired.
Carrying a knife around invites an escalation. I will suggest you move from that dangerous neighbourhood. I did it myself, when I knew that it would only be a matter of time, when I would be too slow to dodge bullets.
I admit it. I am way too slow. Except when I outran a man about the same age as I was- 50+. He ran out of breath before I did. 😉 It only took 50–100 feet for him to give up. I was running backwards, while he was charging at me.

A lot of modern combative schools will teach you how to use a pocket knife, they will teach quick drawing of the weapon and effective targets, all this should be done under as much pressure and realism as possible.

Most slip joint knives are not much good for self defense. A lock back won’t fold back on your own finger. Most pocket knives are useful for defense only at very close quarters.

A pocket knife is really a poor weapon that your agressor could even return against yourself. Pocket knives are very short. It is a tool, not a weapon.
