Of course not. Your question is an excellent example of folks being programmed to neglect ‘good judgement’ in social situations. You have to ask yourself if the recipient is deserving of an intended gift and whether they will use it wisely and safely. If the ‘gift’ has practical applications and would address a ‘need’ of the recipient, then a Swiss Army Knife would be appropriate. If the recipient has a demonstrated pattern of hurting the cat, kicking a small dog and actively causing pain or psychological trauma to those around them, then a Swiss Army Knife would definitely be an inappropriate gift.

They are totally appropriate. I carry two with me every day. A Victorinox Swiss Army Executive for the mundane from opening letters, cutting tape and cleaning my fingernails. I also carry a Victorinox Swiss Army Swiss Tool that is the best multi tool I have yet to use. It is my ‘you-all, be-all, do-all, end-all.’ I’ve been carrying it for close to twenty years now and it remains as tight as the day I bought it.

In my day in the 1950s, any were a good keychain accessory, today the knife part has become a concern, particularly in airports and in areas of high security. However, there are safer SAKs that have no knife, as meant for airline travel and even teens. I do hear they too still get confiscated at times, it only contains a scissor for cutting, no knife, and the screwdriver does not look like a pick.
In general, the keychain size one is the safest bet and can be added to any keychain or backpack, and is still very useful, even say opening Amazon packages. I routinely take the medium size knife with a < 3″ blade into Canada via land crossing without issue, and always declared and never confiscated in 30 + years, I still have that same SAK.

That is a gift that never goes out of style. I don’t carry one because it will get crushed and mashed in my pocket and horribly abused as a tool. I have other knives and tools for my pocket. But there is one in my desk drawer and the sensibly engineered tools and nice little blade can be quite useful at times.

Why the heck should they? You could as well ask whether screwdrivers or flashlights are inappropriate.
I seriously pity the fool trying to use a SAK as a weapon — the slip joints pose as much risk to an attacker as they do to a victim. Ever tried to pierce something with a SAK, let alone drill? You need to be very, very careful: apply pressure the wrong way, and the knife will close while your fingers are wrapped around the handle. I leave the rest to your imagination.

Not at all.
The Swiss Army knives with the red plastic handles and the numerous tools are exactly what they purport to be — tools.
All of the typical ones are as far from being weapons or items of aggression as one can get. A screwdriver is much scarier as a weapon.

Not in the least.
Although, personally, I prefer the Leatherman line of multi-tools, there’s nothing wrong with a Swiss Army knife. If the person you’re offering the gift to is into that kind of thing, go for it.
I see no reason why it being used as a reference in an eminently sensible judicial ruling should in any way make it taboo.

Certainly not. With all the gadgets, devices, and packages now days they are more useful today than ever. IMO

IME, do you know what one of the most effective “blades” of a SAK is?
The tweezers.
The main reason I choose a SAK, over all others, is their tweezers are very effective for removing splinters, thorns, tines from wire brushes, ticks, and jagged bits of metal from the skin. These tweezers work better than any other set of tweezers made, bar none. And if you have a SAK with you, you have a set of these tweezers with you, at all times.
SAKs are also made from high quality steel, and their manufacture is of the highest quality. So IMO, if you want to spend the money, a SAK is a fine gift. Of course, many people who would appreciate a SAK already have a few of their own.
Now there are a bunch of knee-jerk liberals and Karens, who haven’t spent DAY ONE in the wilderness, who think the term AR means “assault rifle”, and the term “ Swiss Army Knife “ is for violent people, because it has the word “army” in it. Well God Bless them, because if they are ever placed in a survival situation, their practical bush skills and knowledge are so poor, they are going to need it.
