Disappointing. I’ve had many SOG knives over the years, some are good, some are bad, some are broken. The Seal Pup Elite is one of those blades I really want to like, but just can’t. The contours and design are good, the materials SOG uses are awful for the price. I don’t buy off on stainless steel fixed blades anymore, they chip too easily and SOG is no exception.
If you’re sold on the features of the Seal Pup Elite, look into the Ontario SP2 Air Force Survival Knife. It’s everything the SOG should have been.
You can usually find them on Amazon or other online retailers for under $40, half the price of the SOG you found. The blade is well tempered 1095 high carbon steel made in the USA and comparable in length to the Seal Pup Elite. The knife as whole is very damage resistant and reasonably thick. The SP2’s handle is actual kraton instead of zytel like the SOG. The “saw back” is useful for notching wood and going through light metals unlike the SOG. The cl…

Well I own this knife and to say the least, I’m very disappointed. First off, the handle is extremely light which makes it very unbalanced. You feel like there is no weight in your hand and a lot of blade that you don’t have any control over. Also, the AUS8 steel is fairly soft and inexpensive. There are much better options out there for almost any application. Comment on this for your intended use and I could probably help you out!
Authentic XYJ Since 1986,Outstanding Ancient Forging,6.7 Inch Full Tang
I’ve got one and have been quite impressed with it. I got it cheap so threw it in my toolbag. I used it to cut carpets, roofing felt, plasterboard and it did it all so well I took it camping. It made good feather sticks, did a bit of carving and did it well. I think if used within its capabilities it is a great tool that will serve you well. It is a fairly lightweight knife for its size and although it has a hollow grind the edge is still quite thick making it sturdy enough for some rough work. Mine holds a good edge which lasts longer than other knives I own in similar steels. This makes me think the Aus 8 steel has been heat treated very well. I like it.
Wanbasion Black Stainless Steel Knife Set, Sharp Kitchen Knife
I purchased one of these along with an assortment of knives (mostly junk) from a storage locker auction about four years ago. I’m sorry to report that the Pup Elite is the same garbage that SOG has unfortunately been flogging for the last decade or so.
My problem with it includes (but is not limited to):
It’s not sturdy enough to be a survival knife – If you tried to do anything like batoning wood or chopping up kindling you’ll either bend the blade or break.
It’s an “extended” rather than full tang – I would not advise using this knife as if it were a Ka-Bar or something along those lines as it might fail.
It was forged from softer steel – For $40-50 dollars more you can purchase a better quality fixed blade.
People who know about knives will laugh at your SOG – Sorry…but knife collectors and people who use knives as tools and/or weapons will smiled bemusedly, if not outright guffaw when you show off your SOG or regale them with tales of its prowess. Who needs that?
Ontario’s RAT line. Gerber’s LMF series and several fixed blade Benchmades are all close to. if not slightly more than, the SOG. They are also better investments in my opinion, questioner.
