Remember all edges of cutlery face inwards towards your plate..

Napkin always goes on the left and the opening of the fold is toward the plate. It doesn’t matter if the setting is formal or informal. The diner needs to be able to take the corner of the napkin and have it unfold as he lifts it so he can place it on his lap.

It’s informal.
People will say otherwise, but when you have an informal setting, it’s acceptable to put the napkin anywhere you choose.
The napkin might be cloth or paper. You can fold it like origami and place this decoration on top of the plate. You can tuck it under the edge of the plate, you can wrap the napkin around utensils, or use a napkin ring.
The key word here is informal.
Some people believe informal is just a less restrictive form of formal, so they still use a variety of rules regarding the setting. But – informal can also be interpreted as casual, and when something is casual, there’s no real norm to follow.
Although, I do admit that I think of informal as a middle ground between formal and casual, so I will go to lengths to make it as close to formal as possible. This means a cloth napkin either in a decorative napkin ring or folded beneath the utensils on the left side of the plate. However, if I know for a fact that a guest is left handed, I might reverse their place setting. Maybe.

When setting an informal table in the US, you can put the napkin where you like — within reason.
Generally, the napkin goes to the left of the dinner plate. However, you may place the napkins to the left or in the center of the dinner plate, or where the plate will be set (for example, in a buffet) for informal occasions.
You might try your hand at a fancy fold to add a little unexpected flair to an informal meal. Please be aware that in a formal setting, you would never put a napkin in a glass. For example, you would never fold a napkin, so it protrudes from a wine glass. But for a fun, informal setting, I think that is fine.
There are times when you may see the napkin on the right-hand side—usually for more formal settings in parts of Europe.
But in general, I encourage you to have some fun with napkins and with your table settings in general. They do contribute to the overall mood of your event.
Napkins actually have a rich and fascinating history. Their story goes all the way back to Roman times when napkins were the size of bath towels and covered the body during marathon meals.
Today, an informal setting gives you a pass to get creative, have some fun with manageable-sized napkins, and not be constrained by formal, conventional rules.

How to Set a Table for an Everyday Dinner
Lay out a place mat, if you’re using one.
Place the dinner plate in the center of the table setting.
The fork is placed to the left of the plate.
Place the knife to the right of the dinner plate and then set the spoon to the right of the knife.
Set the water glass in the top right corner, above the knife.
The napkin can be placed on top of the dinner plate or beneath the fork.
How to Set a Table for a Casual Meal
Start by laying out a place mat.
Set the dinner plate in the center of the table setting. If you’re serving salad, set the salad plate atop the dinner plate.
Place the fork to the left of the dinner plate. If you’re serving salad, set the salad fork to the left of the dinner fork.
Place the knife to the right of the dinner plate and then set the spoon to the right of the knife.
Set the water glass in the top right corner, above the knife.
Place the wineglass (either a red or a white wineglass, depending on what you’re serving) to the right of the water glass.
The napkin can be placed on the plates or underneath the fork.
How to Set a Table for Formal Events
Begin by laying out a crisp tablecloth. Then place the dinner plate in the middle of the setting. (For a more traditional table setting, place a charger plate beneath the dinner plate.)
Next, add the salad plate on top of the dinner plate.
The bread plate should be placed above and to the left of the dinner and salad plate. The butter knife can be placed horizontally on the bread plate.
The dinner fork goes to the left of the dinner plate and the salad fork goes to the left of the dinner fork.
Place the knife to the right of the dinner plate and then set the spoon to the right of the knife.
The dessert spoon should be placed horizontally above the dinner plate.
Water and white and red wineglasses go in the upper right corner or the place setting. The water glass should be closest to the guest (since hopefully they drink more water than wine), and the red wineglass goes just behind the white wineglass.
Fold the napkin (or use a chic napkin ring) and place it on top of the salad plate.
Add a place card above the dessert spoon. Write the guest’s name on both sides so they can find their seat and the guests on the other side of the table will know who they are talking to.
The coffee cup and saucer can be set below the glasses with the dessert course.
