I once knew a guy who had a benchmade griptillian. This knife has an axis lock to keep the blade locked open, you would use your index and thumb to pull the lock barrel down to release the lock from the lockface to allow the blade to close.
So the knife was used to stab ice blocks with it, and the knife folded on his hand, which reacquired stitches.
What i believed happened was that on one of the stabs, the lock was disengaged by the material he was stabbing into, and since the knife kinda pivots on our arm, there was a slight arcing motion which meant the knife blade would stay unlocked. On the second stab in, since the knife was unlocked and the blade was at an angle, it wouldn’t actually penetrate the material, the tip would glance and close the blade up on the hand.
It is for this reason i only fully trust fixed blades to do heavy tasks. And why i smash ice with a blunt force tool.

Yes and that’s why I carry a strong lock back and get a fixed blade for serious work. I had my fingers sliced several times when I carried a Case Stockman pattern when doing stuff I shouldn’t have been doing.

No, but I’ve had a CRKT KISS lock knife accidentally open in my pocket and slice my thumb when I went to get it out.
I’ve now learnt this rather painful and bloody lesson and carry either a Ken Onion Chive which has a blade lock to keep it closed or a Victorinox Alox Bantam which has a strong retaining spring.

It’s a bit uncommon risk if you are careless with a non locking folder suck as Swiss army knives.
I’ve done it myself when I was young, yes with a Swiss army knife. I miss used it, applying pressure in the wrong direction, and it folded into my fingers.
In the UK locking knives are illegal by default*, so you get used to being careful with folders.
*Yes there’s the caveat that you can have a good reason, such as a knife required for your work as a chief or carpet fitter ect. But locking blades are still illegal by default.

Oooh – I did this when I was about eight. Folded a Swiss-army style penknife right onto my index finger – cut it down to the bone, and I still have the scar.
Bought a locking knife after that.

Many years ago I had a knife that I was buffing snap nearly closed on my finger. It had a faulty lock mechanism, and the incident caused the knife to be re-engineered.

Yes, I do. It happened during the testing of lock strength at Cold Steel. Normally the edge would be ground off but this time we were rushing to get it done. Never rush around dangerous situations. Thankfully Robert didn’t do any grave damage to himself. The testing has since been modified to take the human element out.
