As with most “lifetime” warranties today, it is a “Limited Lifetime Warranty”.
Basically, it is meant to assure you that things will last forever, but isn’t worth much more than the words printed on the box. Their website states that the warranty does not cover normal maintenance and service, ordinary wear and tear, and does not apply to any Covered Products or component parts which have been lost or stolen; or subject to commercial use, corrosion, misuse, neglect, intentional damage, carelessness, accident; unauthorized or improper disassembly, adjustments, modifications, or repairs made or attempted by anyone other than a qualified technician following Old Timer authorized procedures. Basically, other than it falling to pieces when you put it in a hermetically sealed chamber, you’re buying a new one if it breaks or wear out.
That said, I’ve carried Old Timer knives for years. Decades. I’ve owned two different pocket knives, one of those was a hand-me-down from my Dad, who carried them for decades as well (the other, if memory serves, was bought at a Sprouse-Ritz… Giving an indicator at how long ago it was). Mine were built in the USA; anything you buy today will be built in China – so I’m not sure about build and material quality. If I saw any at a yard sale today with the USA stamp on it, I’d be sure to snap it up as long as it was in good shape.
I still own those knives, though I quit carrying them in favor of the newer one-handed knives so popular today (a Kershaw 1987, made in China) as one hand is often full of something when I need to use it and I don’t need to dig to the bottom of my pocket to find it. The Old-Timers always stayed sharp and took a razor edge pretty easily; while I’ve gotten the Kershaw to a razor edge, I typically keep it “Sharp enough” with a diamond sharpener – a minute’s worth of effort – versus breaking out my old whetstones and really honing everything like I used to.
