If the point of a thrown knife went into a person, the puncture wound would hurt and bleed a bit. If the knife hit the wrong place, the wound could be serious or even fatal. However, knife throwing is mostly a trick and not an effective fighting tactic. A thrown knife is moving slowly enough that people could duck out of the way. A knife can’t be thrown far enough to make knife throwing a good tactic for long range fighting. “No spin” knife throwing is difficult, and if a knife is thrown with a spin, the distance has to be just right or the handle of the knife will hit the target first. Once in a while, someone can throw a knife as an effective combat move, but mostly, knife throwing is just a performance sport.
Among performers who do knife-throwing, some will throw towards an assistant who is holding a balloon or some other target. Sometimes, that can make the trick more dramatic.

I have to agree with the other answer, with one exception and that is that knife throwing has some value as a last ditch attack when you’ve got nothing else. It’s also something that is worth knowing if for what ever reason you can’t own firearms. Other than that it is kind of useless but fun as hell to watch. Some throwers can make a real show of it and some (like myself) can and do throw a little bit of everything , shovels, baseball bats, kitchen cutlery, pretty much anything can be thrown. And people …

I remember seeing knife throwing for entertainment where the knives were aimed to miss the person. But that was many years go, I don’t think today’s insurance companies will allow it anymore.
In combat, it would be a desperate last action as your giving you weapon away to the enemy. But it was done.

No.
The ones who have demonstrations with a partner throw the knives next to their partner, not at them.
The knives are also designed to be wide near the points to minimize penetration if they miss and hit their partner.

I practiced very hard to be consistent at throwing a knife. It got to the point that I could throw it very fast and hard but I was limited by how far away I could throw it. I could have half the blade through a half inch plywood board but since the knife only turned one half of a rotation, I had to be within about 30 feet. It was just an experiment to see IF I could do it and didn’t plan on ever using it as a defensive means. If I was at the right distance I could do it over and over again. However, how often would I be at that perfect distance from my target? After becoming very proficient at that distance, I stopped after a week of practice when I finally snapped the blade by hitting at the wrong angle. I wouldn’t bet my life on throwing a knife. I’ll just hang on to it and hope the distance to my attacker doesn’t come that close.
Spring Assisted Knife – Pocket Folding Knife – Military Style
If you are referring to circus performances, they used to be spring loaded in the back of the wheel that someone would be attached to, and the “handles” would be sharpened, so that they would pop the balloon, as they emerged from the back of the wheel. The “thrower”, then just had to have some way of getting rid of the knife, but make it look like it was being thrown at the wheel. The rest was timing, in that the knife emerging from the back, would pop out at the right time. I can’t say that I know for a fact, that it’s still done that way, but I will say it’s very likely that it’s done that way, more often than not.

I went to a show a couple of weeks ago where one of the acts was a knife thrower. Using knives that were very over sized, maybe 10 inch blades and 6 inch handles with a 4 or 5 inch blade depth and visible from anywhere on the floor, he did a number of tricks. He broke balloons thrown up in the air, hit paper plates on a rotating wheel and other such tricks with those big blades. The final two acts were when his Beautiful scantly clad assistant stood in front of the now still wheel and he hurled those huge blades at her outlining her body. His next act was for the beautiful scantly clad assistant to “strap” herself to the wheel and have it rotate while he once again hurled those humongous blades at her outlining her form. It was quite a performance but he never got closer then a foot of her body. I have seen this act a couple of other times by other performers where the knife thrower would get closer to the assistant once where she was pinned to the wheel by the knife piercing the very lose fitting outfit. So yes knife throwers do hurl knives at people but mostly in performance art not in real life combat situations for the most part. Knife throwing is a practiced skill and takes a lot of time to learn and is not as effective in real life as it is in the movies,
