I have heard that it was traditional done in Sweden, but only under the right circumstances. That is a lot of snow. Powder snow that mets two criteria:
It does not have enough buoyancy to carry a wolf. A wolf has to move trough the snow, very slowly
It has enough buoyancy to carry a man skiing.
Then look at your skis:
Look at the very fron. It does not end in a sharp peak. It looks like this:
That is because you should have a chance to tie your knife there. (How to do it? I do not know. Seems impossible to me but mayby modern skis has degenerated)
Then you simply ski after the wolf and cut it be the knife tied to your ski. Repeat until the wolf is dead.
Beware: Do not attack a wolf pack. Be sure it is a lonely wolf.
The tricky part. When a wolf can not move on the snow it will not be running around. It will properly sleep in a cave in the snow. To find the wolf you have to know the place where it is likely to cover.

Yes, if you’re German.
Historically, German peasants were not allowed to carry swords, but were allowed to carry knives. How did they define the difference?
A sword has a tang going through the handle with a pommel on the end, while a knife has a slab tang sandwiched between two wooden grip plates, riveted into place.
Sword:
Knife:
Allow me to introduce the Messer . A Messer was a constructed using the sandwich method, meaning that it was, legally, a knife. In fact, the name is German for knife. They were also up to a meter long and weighed 2–2.5 lb.
Also a knife
I think you could probably kill a wolf with that.

Yes. If the wolf has been tranquilized.
No. If the wolf is currently severing your jugular with its razor-sharp teeth.
For all other scenarios, the answer is squarely in the “possibly…but let’s face it, probably not” category.

Since you asked “can YOU kill” – I would assume you meant me… and I have to say I probably can… with 60% chances… as it really depends on the wolf itself.
I’ve fought with wolves before… it’s all in the situation.
First I must say that you’d never fight with just one wolf in nature… they always come in packs. And they will attack you from all directions.
A knife will not be enough.
But let’s say the situation is that you are hunting a wolf – and you’re one on one – and you have a knife and the wolf has … himself.
Most men will die in that situation or get injured severely.
A wolf is super fast and before you know it – he will have his teeth in you…and you will try to hurt him but he will continue to fight you even injured – and keep tearing pieces of your body… till you no longer can fight.
A knife is only useful if you know HOW to fight a wolf. If you understand how they attack – and how to avoid being injured first.
Because what will happen in most cases is that you’ll try to stab the wolf – not understanding how fast they are – to them you’re like in slow motion… so they’ll snap at your hand and bite it… and the knife will fall to the ground.
And then you lose your advantage.
You cannot fight a wolf like you fight a human.
The way I would do it is leave the knife for later.
I would jump on the wolf – tackle it – and immobilize his movement – put my head close to his head so he doesn’t move it much… and I would use my legs to hold his body.
The only way to win a fight with a wolf is close-fight – so he doesn’t bite you much.
I will get injured – because he will probably bite me a few times till I tackle him down… but once I’m holding it – and strangling it – I would take my knife out and finish the job.
Of course , I LOVE wolves and will never hurt one – It’s my favorite animal.
And a wolf will never attack a human for no reason… they FEAR humans and will run away at the first sight.
They are amazing creatures …
But if I am attacked by one – somehow in weird situation – I am confident I will be the winner…
Now , against a group of wolves… i have no chance in the world.. not even with a gun.
They are amazing predators that works perfectly in a group.
I used to have a Malamute mixed with a wolf – and we used to “fight” a lot… as boys do… as a game. He loves to play around and he knew we are just playing.
He was not as strong as a wolf… but he was huge (almost 200lb) and very fast… just like a wolf. And every time we fought – I would get a few bites in my hands before I could put him to the ground… super fast… he could read my moves … and sometimes I didn’t even SEE him bite me or FEEL it at all… until the end – then I saw my hands bleeding and I was … what the hell… WHEN ?!? I didn’t even notice he did that…
A wolf however is much deadlier – because their teeth are stronger and sharper from hunting all day and crushing bones… their bites do real damage and tear flash & crush bones like nothing… so you have to really know the creature in order to fight it.

Not really. Is there any chance you could? Sure, there’s a chance I could hit the lottery tomorrow and win 60 million. How likely is that?
Wolves mostly attack without sensing it, first off. Second, they largely travel in packs.
And say third, you happen to come in direct contact with a wolf, one, away from the pack. And you have a knife on you.
They weigh about 230 pounds.
They’re big, strong, and powerful animals. One single bite, from a wolf, will shatter any bone in your body. That’s how powerful their bite is. And they don’t just bite once, and that’s it. They keep their jaws into your flesh until you bleed out.
You have a knife, that can stick into it and it bleeds. One wolf has 42 knives (teeth) in their mouth, and are faster and stronger than a human being.
So who’d have an advantage? If you caught the wolf off guard, sure, you’d kill it. If it’s a Grey Wolf, and has you in its sights, ready to attack.
Then, you’d be screwed.
The odds of this happening are low though. Wolves don’t really like to come in contact with people, and they’re very aware of their surroundings.
Going into combat with a wolf, wouldn’t be a rewarding experience though, unless you’re loaded with a gun.
Even then, say the wolf is literally 5 to 10 feet away. It’s easy to panic, when you see this big and powerful animal coming charging at you. If we’re talking about a grey wolf anyways.
As you can see, grey wolves can get pretty big.

Can you kill a wolf with just a knife?
I know people who can kill a wolf without a knife.
These people could be of a different species if you solely looked at the difference in their abilities.
Some people I know have as much muscle in their body as I weigh and I’m no feather myself.
Humans are capable as grapplers/wrestlers. This is something a wolf is incapable of doing and defenseless against. Humans can also strike very hard, in fact with training humans can shatter bricks and bone with their strikes.
The following is a list of things that a human defending his life against a wolf attack would be trying to do. Don’t try any of these at home as you will easily die or get permanent injuries and even if you win you’ll be killing a proud animal, potentially unnecessarily. These are to be viewed as martial arts theory on fighting wolves, strictly academically speaking.
When it tries to bite you, use your other arm to thrust it’s head sideways to protect your other arm
Try to grab a hold of the wolf
If at any time you’re able to, lock your thighs around it’s lungs and squeeze like your life depended on it (because it does)
Try to use one hand to get a good grip of it’s throat and don’t be squeamish – try to grab a hold of the windpipe (trachea) and don’t let go, holding a wolf by it’s throat allows you to twist it’s head away from you and helps you avoid being bitten – note that you’ll need to approach the throat from below the jaw and move really fast and you’re risking the wolf sinking it’s teeth in the gaps of your wrist bones which will be really difficult to break off
If the wolf manages to grab your wrist, use your other arm to gouge at it’s eyes (again, don’t be squeamish, you’d be fighting for your life )
You can also try to dislocate it’s jaw or pry it open with your other arm
Alternatively you can now use your free arm to grab it’s windpipe and crush it if you have the grip strength to do so (applying thumb against your clenched first finger can generate a really strong pincer)
As the wolf is closing in on you or pouncing it has limited sideways movement and can’t evade well – if it is leaping it is not impossible to land a heavy kick or strike on it’s snout
If you’ve practiced a lot of martial arts it is possible you could crush it’s snout with a forceful hit
So, we see there are a lot of things you can do to fight an individual wolf.
If you have a knife, the situation changes considerably.
Ideally, if you have a knife you won’t want to get too close to the wolf. You would like it to try and leap at you in which case you can make a last second rolling evasion.
For instance if your knife is in your right hand, you could hold your left arm in front and your knife arm retracted with the palm next to your hip with the knife pointing at the wolf.
As the wolf pounces or leaps you would try to have it go for your extended left arm. As it is approaching fast you’ll step with your right left forward and to the right, turning the leg 90 degrees to left while also changing your body orientation while pulling back the left arm and using the torsion to thrust as fast as you can at the the left side of the wolf.
Everything going as in the movies, you’d dodge the attack and stab the wolf deep to it’s torso on the left side.
And if you fail you can quickly return to this stance and try again. In fact you could in theory keep doing this all night long considering it uses almost no energy and is easy and quick to do.
If the wolf managed to seize your left arm then it would certainly die since you’d hack away at it with deep stabs towards it’s neck area.
An alternate stance to use would be to crouch down a little and hold your left arm in front and right arm with the knife again next to your hip with the left arm being the extended and expected target. As the wolf closes in you could try to retract your left arm like before while thrusting directly between the upper part of it’s breast and lower part of it’s throat or even at it’s mouth.
I would personally prefer the dodging maneuver since it involves a dodge and you’re less likely to miss by accidentally only grazing skull or so and even when hitting you’re less likely to be knocked over by being hit by it’s body.
Without a knife it’s a real and serious challenge to fight against a single wolf even if you’ve got martial arts background.
With a knife a single wolf becomes considerably more manageable but again, wolves rarely move alone and even then an experienced martial artist would be up for a serious challenge and would find oneself “in jaws of peril”.
Luckily the wolves don’t usually like to attack people but there’s a catch.
If you’re this hulking berserker of a human who’s arms are the size of two ordinary men, you’re more likely to both prevail and also be avoided by wolves.
Because wolves always think about getting the most meat with the least effort. It’s hardly ever worth a snack to potentially lose members of the pack!
So, if they were to attack a human they’d pick the weakest imaginable targets. Of adults, small men or small women, weak old people and children. Essentially whoever looks like they’re not going to put up a big fight.
And this is why it’s hard for a human to fight a wolf. Unless you’ve got a rifle and you’re out to reduce the pack that has wandered too close to human habitation you’re not likely to get to fight them even if you could stand against them bare handed or with a knife.
If you’re unlikely to stand up against a big dog then you’re also most likely of any human to get attacked by a wolf pack.
This is why hunters like to take out wolves. Hunters have children.

I used to have loads of knives when I was younger and i am quite skilled at throwing them, ergo if I managed to get it right inbetween the eyes then I would win, if I missed I would most likely die.
Multiple wolves I would die.
That said, surely one wolf you could literally just kick to death no?
Gerber Gear 22-48485 Paraframe Mini Pocket Knife, 2.2 Inch Fine Edge Blade
This is actually quite easy (and a little gruesome, apologies). In very cold weather you dip the very sharp blade in bacon grease and stick the hilt firmly in the ground. The wolf comes and licks off the bacon grease. The cold anesthetizes his tongue so that he doesn’t realize he is cutting it and he bleeds to death.

Sure you could, if you were prepared and saw it attacking you before he tore your throat out. But wolves are pack animals – you will typically find them in groups and in those situations, your chances of not becoming a meal for a hungry pack are not good.

Can you? Sure, but it will likely resist. Very likely the wolf will cause you some suffering before it goes. Maybe the better question is, “What is the probability that I can kill a wolf with a knife without experiencing some life changing consequences?” I’d put that at somewhere in the 1:10000 range. I’ve seen a lot of these questions lately, “Can you………..?” Almost anything is possible. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a world of possibility, but one of probability. Probably the wolf will kill you before you kill it? Almost certainly.

If you are fighting a wolf, you are most certainly fighting an entire pack that constantly keeps you surrounded with random lunging from all sides. Wolves almost never travel solo, and practically never attack solo unless the target is much smaller and weaker than them (not a human adult) or is cornering them.
Your ability to survive rests in scaring them away, not in combat, unless you have either:
A semi-auto firearm (9mm+ caliber) with a few magazines (20–30 rounds), or
A lot of other adults with knives fighting with you as a pack (like the wolves).
MOSSY OAK 14-inch Bowie Knife, Full-tang Fixed Blade Wood
I think I could win the fight but not using the knife. Just my hands and arms. You post you left arm out and entice the wolf to bite it. You have to be very ready and fast. You pull him as close as you can get your arm to your body. You then take your other arm and hook it behind the wolf’s head and roll your arms. The one he is biting over the top of the other forearm pulling him close to your body. He will be strong but if you do this quickly enough and with the required force it should snap his neck immediately killing him. To make sure if you have the time before another attacks you take the knife and cut his throat. This also works with attack dogs, but you have to be ready and quick enough. Know what and how to perform the moves. I have heard of people shoving their fists down a dog’s throat but I would just as soon end it, as it is my life I am defending.

Hugh Glass probably could, Daniel Boone supposedly “kilt a bar” with a knife- anything is possible. I met a guy in SE Colorado who was supposed to have fought off a mountain lion with a Boy Scout folding knife when it came after him and his younger brother in their tent.
My experience with wolves is limited to wolf/husky hybrids. Had an associate who had several in a chainlink enclosure and they were scary. One Easter after slaughtering a sheep for our neighborhood dinner I tossed these pups the head, the female bit down on it and cracked the skull to get to the brains, seemingly effortlessly. Really and truly I was never comfortable being in the same farm yard with those beasts. Another time hitch hiking both the driver and I forgot the hybrid he had in the back of his truck when I went to retrieve my pack. I was wearing a horse hide bomber jacket when the wolf-dog nipped me, it didn’t break the leather but the bruise bled.
Once read that the trick with guard dogs is to sacrifice your off arm to a bite and then to stab them in the gizzard; with a wolf I suspect the bones in your arm would be pulverized.

Barry Lopez wrote that an old Eskimo trick was to imbed a broken-off knife blade in a big lump of fat, and leave it out where a wolf would find it. The wolf would lick the fat to thaw it out, but eventually would lick down to the knife edge. Once that happened, the wolf’s tongue would get a few bad cuts, and according to the story, the wolf then would eventually bleed to death, leaving a trail of blood by which he could be tracked. Yes, I know it sounds implausible.

In theory – yes, in fact it’s very doable. Buuut there is a catch- you need to understand that wolves are freaking big, strong and have crazy sharp teeth. You can’t mistake a wolf for a dog. So, let’s look at the possible reasons for you to fight with wolf-you are fighting for your life and wolf wants to kill you. First you’ll get a couple of very strong and deep bites, wolf will likely to break your bones too. Sure, if you are ready to face the wolf – you can brace for the impact and do it. And then you’ll most likely die from the bloodloss because unlike wolves-humans don’t get in ritualised and hardcore fights.

You have to get very close to the wolf in order to kill it with a knife, and the wolf will not just be standing there with his throat exposed to you. While you are stabbing at it, it will be attacking you.
The wolf introduced into central Idaho and Yellowstone are the wolves now spreading throughout the northwestern United States. It has a powerful neck to support its large head. The skull is 12 inches long and the wolf is armed with an imposing array of canine and carnassial teeth and huge jaw muscles. This gives it an incredible bite force that can even crack the femur of a moose. When threatened, the bite force can equal up to 1,500 psi. All the wolf has to do is get you down, and he can do so easily. Stab away as he rips you to shreds.
