It definitely can, I’ve been able to fend of a hesitant attacker with a small flick knife with help from my beginner Krav lessons (at that point I hadn’t reached intermediate classes) in Krav you train until your body goes into an autopilot mode when it sees the knife. I don’t even remember what I did. It was as automatic as closing my eyes to sneeze or jumping when frightened, it just reacts. I can’t explain it, but that’s the best way to describe it. I still got cut pretty bad from the knife mind you so it’s not perfect like you see in movies but it can definitely save your life if you fully commit to your training.

Can a martial art Krav Maga really help to defend against an offender with a knife?
It can’t not help.
If I put you in any position, experience and familiarity helps. If I throw 100 balls for you to catch every day, the chances of you catching a ball thrown at you by suprise goes up hugely. It is the whole reason people practice.
What Krav… or any martial art, can’t do, is guarantee your defence. After all, the reason someone uses any weapon isn’t to equalise their chances of winning but to surpass your chances of beating them. Fighting a blade is never an easy day at the office, and they only need to be lucky once.

It’s better than not knowing Krav Maga and having to defend against an offender with a knife.
If you’re attacked with a knife, you’re in a deadly situation.
Having some knowledge of self-defense would be helpful, but you are still in a deadly situation.
Krav Maga increases but doesn’t guarantee your chances of success.
However, increasing is better than nothing.

Yes and no. There is a certain degree of danger when fighting against armed attackers. It is really putting your life on the line and most experts would suggest that you just run or surrender.
Why do I say yes? Most Krav Maga practitioners about E2 can defend themselves against real life attacks, or at least that’s what the jargon says.
Why no? As I said up there, there’s a certain degree of danger against armed attackers. A wrong move can kill you and cause severe damage.
The best course of action would be to run or hide. Fighting should always be the last resort.

Israeli elite soldiers and some US troops – just to name a couple – use Krav Maga as their primary form of unarmed combat.
By that logic, one can assume that no government would send elite soldiers into the field armed with a system that doesn’t work in a variety of situations; including against armed opponents.
Even if the governments don’t care about the 10…

I trained Krav Maga for a while, so here goes.
DO NOT GO HANDS-ON AGAINST A PERSON WHO HAS A KNIFE. If you have a chance to get away, do so.
Krav Maga does teach some techniques that can help you increase the likelyhood of surviving the encounter. But they do not guarantee you will successfully disarm and subdue your attacker. My instructor always drilled into our heads that these techiques were only a last resort in case you have no other means of stopping the attack or getting away.
So yes, Krav Maga CAN help. But does not guarantee success. And it should only be used if you have no other options. Because the consequences of failure… Is death.

If the training is good, sure.
If the training is good, you won’t have to wonder, because you’ll have practiced some realistic simulated knife attacks and will know exactly what you can and can’t do.

Okay, I rarely answer questions on here, because I don’t really have the time. But this shit is dangerous. No martial art will effectively protect you from an attacker with a knife. As soon as you come across a person with a knife, who is intending to kill you, your survival chances drop to 5-10%. (All the videos online, where trainees attack the master and leave their arm hanging there for an eternity, are more fake than silicone tits.) You could turn around and run, risking that he is faster than you and stabs you in the back, sounds scary right? Well, that would increase your chances to 50%, either he is faster, or you are.
With that said, you can outrange him, if you have a good stick, a pipe, or something else nearby that you can grab. Still, thats fucking dangerous, and I don’t recommend that. But as soon as you got a good hit in, it should be enough to buy you some time for running. If you don’t have something to outrange the guy, try throwing something in his face and run. This will at least cause 1-2 seconds distraction, buying time for you to run. Maybe a pushkick can do the same for you, but that again, gives him the chance to stab you or your leg, wich would decrease your chance of surviving immensely.

I’m no martial artist, but my bf has been training in various martial arts for 20 years and I can tell you straight… NOT REALLY NO.
While Krav Maga does teach knife defense technique, it either falls into two categories. These two categories are:
Bullshit Non Practical Knife Defense
Real World Knife Defense
KNIFE DEFENSE IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. And so many martial arts teach it wrong. The amount of BS is insane.
Unfortunately, Krav Maga is a art sold as great self defense and because of this, knife defense is a common means of instruction in many Krav Maga schools. The problem is, much of it is taught wrong, or in an unrealistic fashion, and this sends overconfident students out into the real world, thinking they’re badasses, and if the worst happens, and they are attacked with a knife, they get stabbed multiple times and wind up dead or seriously injured.
See this bullshit in this popular video?
2 million views. Popular video. Not great or realistic technique. Sure, the technique works in theory but it’s not realistic. There is the real world and the fantasy world, and many martial artists, Krav Maga or not, are living in a fantasy world. You know what the best defense from a knife is? Running if able.
IF SOMEONE IS COMING AT YOU WITH A KNIFE… RUN! RUN IF ABLE!
If you’re about to get stabbed, you treat that as an attack on your life. Because you can die. And you better bet your ass it’s hard to defend against. A real knife attack is a rush of anger and steel. A person trying to stab you 10 times in 5 seconds from a variety of angles. It’s brutal. Here’s a reality check:
This is what a knife attack is likely to look like:
I don’t give two shits about you being a third degree black belt in whatever. Try defending yourself such reality and you’re either gonna get lucky, cut up, severely wounded, or wind up dead. What’s that? Oh? You successfully defended yourself against a knife attack in the past. Good for you. Seriously. You were probably VERY lucky. Reality tends to be far harsher than luck. And sometime the knife is meant to be felt, not seen. You may never even see it coming until it’s plunged into one of your kidneys.
Some training is obviously better than none, but you better train for reality or don’t train at all.

“help”? – yes
“really help”? – well, yes and no.
What Krav Maga should be teaching you is don’t go up against someone with a knife if you can possibly avoid it. Don’t be there, run away, give him your wallet, all preferable to fighting a guy with a knife.
But maybe you have to. Maybe you have to defend someone, maybe giving him your wallet isn’t enough. In which case, some Krav Maga is better than nothing. The advantages of training in Krav Maga are firstly you are perhaps slightly less likely to panic. Secondly most untrained people will concentrate on the knife and try to fend it off. That doesn’t work for long. Unless you stop the attacker with some sort of counter attack he will just keep coming and you will eventually get stabbed. And thirdly you will hopefully have some training that will help you sucessfully both block the knife and put in a meaningful counter attack, maybe just enough so you can escape.
Does it help? Yes it’s better than nothing. Your chances of survival increase from close to zero to something at least higher than close to zero.
Will it work? That depends on a number of things. How well-trained / determined / strong your attacker is and how well-trained, determined and strong you are.
Knife threats are different from knife attacks. If your attacker is running at you with a zombie knife, your best best may be to run. If someone is trying to bundle you into a van then you may need to fight and if he’s expecting you to comply then good technique and surprise are your best weapons followed quickly by getting the hell out of there.
I know people who would stand a pretty good chance against a half-hearted attack from a young mugger who doesn’t know what he’s doing and isn’t expecting a well-trained full-on brutal Krav Maga response. They may well still get cut but they’d stand a better chance of coming out alive than someone with no training.
No-one including those people, should or would ever choose to try it out, confident in winning against a knife-wielding attacker if they had an alternative. It’s not the movies!

I really can’t answer that honestly. First off I don’t practice Krav, secondly you might want to do some research on knife attacks, they are fast and brutal, most people who get stabbed, get stabbed multiple time and many are not even aware a knife was in play until after the fact.
