For ultimate freedom, give your child three things: a bicycle, a knife, and a dog.
Endowed in these are the ability to explore, create, and share it with a friend… also in these things are a chance to avoid evil, defend from it, and to destroy it.
My daughters have been able to discourage creeps by casually trimming stray threads during conversation. My sons have seen creeps drive off after the dog comes over. I have been left utterly unmolested by muggers who didn’t see the weapon until they decided to close… Yes, my family is a believer in building polite social interaction; discouraging predators is a good first step.

Of course they CAN!
In the UK however it is illegal, the age of criminal responsibility being 10 and if found they would get into the criminal justice system. At that age it would be unlikely to be a punitive outcome, but it would be a starting point.
Under 10 it would be considered a child welfare issue and Social Services would become involved.
The older the child, the higher the chance of punitive criminal sanctions
The biggest issue though is that a knife is very bad at protecting anyone. It massively increases your chances of being stabbed with that or another knife and if you end up the person doing the stabbing, rather than being stabbed, you are probably looking at very serious time inside.
Carrying a knife for ‘protection’ at any age in the UK is a serious mistake.

They can meaning it is possible for a child to carry a knife. You must define ‘CHILD’. My child is 55 a retired sailor and proficient in small arms, he also carries a pocket knife at all times (better to have etc.’) but for sake of argument assume you mean a person between age 7 and 18. No it’s not a good idea because they don’t have the maturity to know when to walk away or even run like the Devi Himself was chasing.

The legality of carrying a knife depends on your location. Should a child carry a knife for self defense? Probably not. Children aren’t known for their good judgement. Plus anything that they can use, a larger attacker can take away and use on them.
That being said, a knife is a useful thing to carry. I would have no reservations about allowing a reasonable child to carry a pocket knife, particularly some versions of a Swiss Army knife. You can buy them in a ton of different configurations with various useful implements.
I started carring both single-blade knives and multitool knives around 10 or 12. And I’ve continued carrying them for most of my life. Of course these days, people have become are more concerned about carrying these “concealed weapons” than in the 80’s when I was a kid. So just make sure that they aren’t carrying it anywhere they shouldn’t, like to school.
Edit: While a knife is a poor choice for a self-defense weapon, if you are super concerned you might want to look into a self-defense pen. Having a pen at hand is even more useful than a knife, and it can be used as a last ditch weapon in a pinch.

Probably not.
However, if a child is going to carry a knife, the child needs to be trained with the knife by a professional knife defense trainer.
Also, if a child needs a knife for protection, there needs to be school and police involvement to stop whatever danger is confronting the child.

Depends on where they live and where they carry it. School definitely get into trouble. Rural areas of the US not so much depending on local/ state laws. Mine had carried a knife since he was four. Yes he is trained to use it in multiple situations not just protection and yes he is responsible. He will b 9 this spring and his hardest choice when carrying is choosing which of his 30+ knives to take with him. We live in the country on almost 8 acres we have coyotes, snakes and a variety of other critters, so until he decides to start carrying his rifle I know he has some protection until I can get to him if needed. As for off property he carries everywhere except for school as well.

Close. I’d usually give my darling daughters, all adopted from people who’ve criminally abused and/or neglected ‘em, some 9Volt stabbers. The two pronged knitting needles are long enough to get through most armor & gives off enough of a jolt to deter the aggressors who suddenly grabs my girls claiming to be their biological parents…

Why? Unless they are a trained knife fighter they are likely to have it taken off them and used against them. Teach them to run away and get away from situations. A knife is a terrible defensive weapon very hard to stab someone just a little bit
