Sue the school. It’s a plastic knife. I only see a issue when a kid decides to cut someone with it.
So if my school expels my child for having a plastic knife, and he is using it the proper way, not only will I sue the school, but I will go ballistic on anyone who has a problem with plastic knives.

Zero tolerance policies make things like this happen, and they’re not likely to go away any time soon. It may seem ridiculous, but when the alternative is millions of dollars lost in a law suit (“And did you do EVERYTHING POSSIBLE to ensure the safety of the students, Principal Skinner? You’re under oath and we have ALL the records”) then that’s what’s going to be status quo. Don’t expect common sense to prevail.

That’s unreasonable. I understand a suspension but being expelled is ridiculous. Try to meet with the principal to discuss it if you can.

Retain a lawyer. If that is the whole story, the administration’s response was entirely unreasonable. I have worked with schools on the behalf of clients and school administrators like to throw their weight around in a system that puts the parents at a severe disadvantage. Not only are most of us not part of the educational system, which means that we don’t actually know what they can and can’t do, but we were all taught to respect and listen to teachers/principals/etc. Parents tend to be deferential to the administrators and follow their recommendations or accept their consequences. Those who see the child not being properly educated or somehow mistreated (such as in this case) are typically, very well served by retaining a lawyer, who does know the rules that the school has to play by. Just having someone on your side that can make it a fair fight, will likely cause the school to back down. That attorney could also threaten to make the story public, which no school system will want and also may result in them backing down off of this ridiculous position.
Best of luck and I hope you can get a more reasonable response out of the school.
