I never saw either style while I served back in the ‘Dark Ages’ and real pro’s choose the style blade that suits their fighting style. I did see one young man get knocked unconscious when he tried to impress his opponent with his ability to handle a Butterfly knife. The guy laughed and picked up the Butterfly knife off the ground before walking away. The Karambit knife looks pretty cool in cinematic encounters but it doesn’t suit my fighting style when I was young and foolish. None of the British S.A.S., Royal Marines or Navy SEALS I worked with in a support role ever carried one that I was aware of. All the spinning and pirouette moves utilized with a Karambit was contrary to how I used a blade…….. successfully. Sorry I couldn’t be of greater assistance.

Those styles of knife are completely different, and neither is suitable for military combat. Individual fights can be a different story.
The butterfly knife is just a different method of folding, so it’s usefulness in a fight is determined by the blade style and the fighting style of the user. Note that the tendency is to be ‘flashy” when opening it, which is the time a wise opponent will end the fight.
As for the karambit, it is typical of a certain class of martial arts, and could be effectively used by those styles, and pretty much those styles only. However, due to the common concept of those styles of disarming and then delivering fatal strokes, it would seem to be a poor choice from a legal standpoint, as once the attacker is disarmed, the justification for killing evaporates.

If by combat you mean warfare, I doubt it.
If you just mean fighting, the karambit can be an effective weapon if you are well trained. However it is most effective against an un trained and/or unarmed opponent.
Butterfly knives (Balisongs) are not a particularly effective fighting knives. The hinge is a point of weakness so they are easily damaged. Additionally the handle tapers towards the blade and there is no real crossguard so that it is easy for the hand to slip onto the blade.
Both of these weapons are more successful as intimidation devices than in combat.

Certainly. Here’s the Wiki article on the karambit:
Like many martial-arts weapons, originally an agricultural tool, but adapted for fighting.
The Balisong or “butterfly knife” was popular throughout east Asia, especially the Philippines.
